High Award became the first stakes winner for his young sire Holy Roman Emperor when he claimed the Listed Woodcote Stakes (1200m) overnight on the Epsom Derby card in England.
Showing good early speed and prominent throughout, High Award was always travelling strongly for jockey Johnny Murtagh before striding clear with 300m to run. Kept up to his work in the closing stages by Murtagh, High Award was never seriously challenged and cruised home to score a comfortable 1-1/2 length win over Dubawi Gold (Dubawi - Savannah Belle by Green Desert).
Premier Clarets (Ivan Denisovich - Buleberry Walk by Green Desert) was another head away in third.
High Award (ex Tarascon by Tirol), a 425,000 guineas purchase by Demi O’Byrne at the 2008 Tattersalls December Foal Sale, had been the first winner for his sire when scoring over 1000m in March at the Curragh in Ireland.
A trip to Royal Ascot looks set to be on the agenda for the bay colt with Fozzy Stack, son of trainer Tommy, telling Coolmore.com that the stable was very happy with the professionalism of the colt saying
”He’s a very laid back horse. Since he arrived at Epsom he has done nothing but sleep eat and drink”.
If he pulls up well the Group 2 Coventry Stakes over 1200m at Royal Ascot would be under consideration as the next race for the colt.
The first juveniles of Holy Roman Emperor have hit the ground running up in the northern hemisphere with six individual winners sofar, along with another five placegetters, making the young son of Danehill the leading first season sire.
Along with High Award, another of his early winners that could shape up as a strong candidate for two-year-old riches at Royal Ascot is the impressive maiden winner Crying Lightening (ex Auction Room by Chester House).
Crying Lightening is due to have her next start in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes.
Holy Roman Emperor’s eldest Australasian progeny will turn two after August 1st and they have been well received by buyers at the major yearling sales around the country with some of them going to Australasia’s leading trainers in Gai Waterhouse, Chris Waller, Peter Moody, Gerald Ryan, Mark Walker and Roger James.
Holy Roman Emperor stands in NSW at Coolmore Australia’s property this spring on a fee of $27,500 incl. GST.
