Bluebloods Editor, David Bay, continues his series of profiles on new sires for 2010 in the southern hemisphere.

He takes a look at the pedigrees, race record and he offers some suggested advice for suitable matings (remember, this mating advice is general in nature and should be used as a guide only, as every mare is an individual and her entire pedigree and conformation should be considered when deciding on a suitable beau!).

I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit (IRE)-Cannerelle by Canny Lad)
Yarraman Park Stud, Scone, NSW. Fee: $11,000 (inc gst).

Sire: Invincible Spirit (Green Desert-Rafa by Kris) won seven of his 17 starts including the Sprint Cup-Gr.1 at Haydock Park and was Co Champion Older Sprinter in Ireland at four. His dam won the French Oaks-Gr.1 and produced six winners, five of them stakes horses. His sire, a son of Danzig, won the July Cup-Gr.1 and Flying Childers Stakes-Gr.1 and his stallion sons include Volksraad, Desert Sun, Desert Prince and Cape Cross, who all stood in the southern hemisphere, and the UK-based Sheikh Albadou and Oasis Dream. Invincible Spirit is the sire of 294 winners (60.5% to runners) of $23.9m and his 35 stakes winners (7.2%) include the Gr.1 winners Lawman (French Derby, Prix Jean Prat) Fleeting Spirit (July Cup) and 2010 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.1 heroine Yosi (ex Fuji Fairy by Fuji Kiseki (JPN)).

Dam: Cannarelle (Canny Lad-Countess Pedrille by Zoffany (USA), inbred 4mx5m to Star Kingdom via Biscay and Royal Artist, was unraced but her dam is a sister to the Gr.2 winner of 11 races Mamzelle Pedrille (dam of O’Lonhro) and to Damzelle Pedrille (dam of stakes winner Madam Pedrille). Golden Slipper winner Canny Lad (Bletchingly-Jesmond Lass by Lunchtime (GB)) is one of our best broodmare sires and his daughters have produced 394 winners (62.5%) of $39.8m, with 30 stakes winners (4.8%) led by seven Gr.1 winners, notably champion sire Redoute’s Choice, Desert War, Mnemosyne, Manhattan Rain, Neroli and Kursi (by Desert Prince).

Race record: Five length debut win over 1000m at Warwick Farm at two, beating subsequent stakes winner I Have No Fear in 57.80. Backed up next start in the Kindergarten Stakes-Gr.3 and wasn’t disgraced when third, from a wide alley, to subsequent Golden Slipper winner Forensics. Injured in the Todman Slipper-Gr.2 next start, the handsome colt was off the scene for some time and was sent to Victoria, recapturing his best form at four with wins in the SAJC D.C McKay Stakes-Gr.3 (1100m) and Monash Stakes-LR (1100m) and finishing a brave second to champion Takeover Target in the SAJC Goodwood Handicap-Gr.1 (1200m). In fact he struck a purple patch between mid-March and mid-July of 2009, winning four from five and running second in the Goodwood. Those wins began with a four length romp over 1000m in Melbourne (57.10), a 1-3/4 length win in the Gr.3 McKay (1:03.09), second in the Gr.1 (1.10.78) and a defeat of favourite Gran Sasso in the Monash.
Raced by Ray and Brett Gall, I Am Invincible retires as the winner of five races (1000m-1100m) and two placings from 13 starts, and Yarraman Park’s Arthur and Harry Mitchell are delighted to have secured the horse for stud duties as a replacement for the infertile Foreplay.

“He showed unbelievable speed from only a couple of starts as a juvenile, that talent was realised later in his career with several spectacular wins and a gallant second to the great champion Takeover Target in the Goodwood. His sire Invincible Spirit is regarded as one of the best in Europe and as such no longer shuttles to Australia, while his female family is full of good, tough Australian winners and current stakes horses O’Lonhro and Madame Pedrille,” Arthur Mitchell said.

Pedigree notes: Invincible Spirit has nicked well with mares by Mr. Prospector line sires and also has a Gr.3 winner from a mare by Halling (by Diesis, a brother to his damsire Kris) and good winners from mares from the Northern Dancer sireline. Daughters of Choisir (doubling Lunchtime, Sharpen Up, Biscay and Danzig) or his sire Danehill Dancer and of Flying Spur look suitable, as do daughters of Octagonal and his son Lonhro (who has already worked with this family) along with daughters of Snippets (and his NZ-based son Pins) and those by Zeditave and his sons Strategic and the Yarraman Park-based Magic Albert, it’s worth noting his 2YO Gr.1 winner Yosi is from a mare by Fuji Kiseki (Sunday Silence). Has line breeding to Crafty Admiral and Princequillo.
