Winter racing in Victoria on Saturday was at Flemington and promising gelding Doubtful Jack turned in one of the better efforts of the day when the three-year-old demolished his rivals in the Brian Beattie Hcp (1400m).
Trained at Caulfield by the state’s leading trainer Peter Moody the win took his total to 68.
Ridden by apprentice Taylor Lovelock-Wiggins, Doubtful Jack began well and was driven along to share the lead soon with the in-form Beyond Pardon (by Invincible Spirit).
A furlong later, Lovelock-Wiggins asked Doubtful Jack to settle and the gelding obliged, dropping his head, as they tracked the last start Moonee Valley winner. Once they straightened for home Doubtful Jack got get clear of him and Bawaardi.
At the famous clock tower the race was well and truly over as Doubtful Jack raced away to record his fourth career win by a widening four lengths.
State Grade (Redoute’s Choice - Arantxa Rose by Rancho Ruler), worked home nicely for the runners-up cheque, giving the Arrowfield stallions the quinella.
Beyond Pardon (ex Unbridled Fire by Unbridled’s Song) held on for third another length away.
The victory gave the Lovelock-Wiggins his maiden win at the home of the Melbourne Cup and opened his account with his new master.
Bought for $70,000 as a weanling at the 2007 William Inglis Australian select weanling sale by Greendale Pastoral Co Qld, Doubtful Jack was then reofferred as a yearling at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale where Peter Moody paid $100,000 for the son of Not a Single Doubt.
Doubtful Jack has earnings of more than $190,000 and has repaid his owner Mr Meads in full and is one of three winners for his dam, Tootsie Roll (by Marscay).
Not a Single Doubt, a first crop son of Redoute’s Choice, is out of Singles Bar (by Rory’s Jester), a daughter of the wonderful producer, Easy Date (by Grand Chaudiere).
Not a Single Doubt’s fee remains unchanged at $13,750.00 (inc gst) this spring.
