As the 2009-10 season draws to a close only a handful of races remain that offer black type and one of those was the Ramornie Handicap run at Grafton on Wednesday where it was won in fine style by Pinwheel, a son of Darley’s leading third-season sire Lonhro.
The stock by Lonhro are enjoying a wonderful run with more than 100 individual winners earning more than $7.4 million; Pinwheel’s effort in the Ramornie gave the son of Octagonal his 15th stakes winner.
Coming off a last start runners-up placing behind Hay List in the Group 3 W.J. Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm, Pinwheel was given the perfect ride by Dan Nikolic and settled near the speed and when asked he put paid to his rivals to claim a solid win.
In taking the 1200m dash, Pinwheel chalked up career win number six with as many placing’s from12 starts the colts earnings have grown past $300,000.
Bred by Woodlands Stud, Pinwheel is the first black type earner for his dam Quilt (by Danehill) and hails from a family that has produced the 1994 Group I Oakleigh Plate winner, Kenvain (by Kenmare).
Lonhro stands at Darley’s Kelvinside property at a fee of $88,000 (inc gst).
