The Irish bred, Drunken Sailor is one of the toughest horses in training and the bay gelding signed off his northern hemisphere-racing season with a win in the Listed Windflower March Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday.
The son of Tendulkar (Spinning World – Romanette by Alleged) is being prepared for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup; where he has 53kilos, by his trainer Luca Cumani and is due to go into quarantine this week.
A winner of eight of his 28 starts, with more than $500,000 in earnings, Drunken Sailor is the sole winner of three foals out of Ronni Pancake (by Mujadil) a winner of a mile maiden in Great Britain.
Ronni Pancake is a descendant of a modest winning family in both England and Ireland, however, the family does pick up quickly with an injection of quality Australian and New Zealand blood in the fourth generation when the VRC L.K. S. Mackinnon Stakes winner Lad of the Manor (by Zabeel) appears.
