THE Patrick Shaw trained Rocket Man was tonight named the winner of the Aushorse Marketing Australian-bred Singapore Champion Award.

Connections of Rocket Man, including his South African based owner Fred Crabbia, were presented with the award at a cocktail reception in Singapore.

Special guests at the event included the Australian High Commissioner Doug Chester as Guest of Honour, the region’s leading trainers, owners, media and senior officials from the Singapore Turf Club.

Rocket Man (pedigree), a half-brother to dual South African Group 1 winner Our Giant, took Singapore racing by storm when he began his racing career.

Bred by Dean Fleming and sold through the Tyreel Stud draft at the 2007 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale, Rocket Man quickly graduated to become the 2009 World Turf Champion 3YO Sprinter, with his feats recognised on a global scale.

Rocket Man has taken on the world’s best in the Group 1 KrisFlyer International Sprint (1200m) and the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen (1200m) only to be narrowly beaten on both occasions.

His run in the Group 2 Lion City Cup (1200m) saw him take centre stage, where his front-running efforts lead a crack field winning by two and a half lengths.   His most recent run was on Sunday night after returning from a spell, winning the S$200,000 Group 3 Woodlands Trophy breaking the course record.

Patrick Shaw has successfully taken Rocket Man to win 10 of his 13 starts and placing second on three occasions.  His career prizemoney is now over S$2.14million (A$1.74million).  He is now likely to travel to Japan to take on the best in the Group 1 Sprinters Stakes (1200m) in early October.

In a new award category, Steven Burridge was honoured the Aushorse Marketing Australian-Bred Winning Trainer.  Over the season Steven has successfully won 54 races with 28 Australian-bred horses.  Steven was on hand to receive the award.

Steven’s success has been highlighted with multiple wins by the Australian-breds in his stable High Noon, Esteem Power and Happy Everybody just to name a few.  High Noon from 18 starts has won five times and has placed second and third on four occasions.

As winners of the prestigious awards, Rocket Man’s connections and Steven Burridge received cold cast bronze statuettes from renowned Australian artist Mary Pinsent’s Equine Series.

Singapore has become a major export market for Australian breeders where 53% of the runners are Australian-bred.  These awards are a perfect opportunity to honour and recognise success in the region,” Aushorse Marketing Chairman Antony Thompson said.
