The VRC staged a fantastic program at Flemington last Saturday, which saw the running of the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes, Danehill Stakes and the Let’s Elope Stakes and all three stakes events were won by progeny of Darley stallions.
The Makybe Diva Stakes (registered name: Craiglee Stakes) saw a powerful win by the 2009 Melbourne Cup winner, Shocking when he stormed home to take the days’ feature event and in doing so he demonstrated his love of his home track – where he is unbeaten in four runs – but also his versatility.

A handsome bay stallion Shocking is one of 11 group or grade one winners for his sire, Street Cry.
Shocking landed Australia’s most famous race over 3200m but reverted to half that distance on Saturday, charging down the straight in determined fashion to win his third group race, named in honour of the three-time Melbourne Cup-winning mare.

A son of the Danehill mare Maria di Castiglia, Shocking earnings of more than $4.1million from his six wins and seven placing’s, have given his owner a tidy return as his owner Laurence Eales paid $64,000 for him from the Magic Millions Breeze Up sale.

A race earlier the Darley owned Soul won the Group 2 Danehill Stakes in convincing style.

Soul is by Commands, a son of the great sire for whom the race was named, nailed his second career win by three-quarters-of-a-length.    Trained at the track by Peter Snowden, whose son Paul runs the stable, the bay three-year-old had been runner-up to subsequent Group 1 winner Toorak Toff in the Listed Vain Stakes at Caulfield and got the better of Buffering (Mossman – Action Annie by Anabaa).

General Truce (Brief Truce – General Resolve by General Nediym) was another short neck away in third.

“In the autumn, he’s going to be a very hard horse to beat, no matter what he race in,” Paul told TVN’s Bruce Clark.

Soul raced just off the leaders without cover down the famous straight course.  When his rider Mark Zahra asked him to extend he quickly gained the upper hand before drawing away to win by three-quarters-of-a-length.

Bred by Woodlands Stud, Soul is the first stakes winner for his dam, Marvilha (by Night Shift) and adds more depth to the family of Peach, who in turn is the dam of the recently retired Denman (by Lonhro).

Just forty minutes later, another Darley stallion, Shamardal was in the news when No Evidence Needed claimed a last stride win in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m).

Wearing the Patinack Farm Racing syndicate colours No Evidence Needed is the first stakes winner for Generosa (by Generous) and the principal of the stud Nathan Tinkler was on hand to witness the win.

Tinkler explained to Clark that the win was fitting as “Bart Cummings bred her and he trained Let’s Elope, so we’re more than happy to take this one.”

Patinack Farm purchased No Evidence Needed out of the William Inglis Easter Yearling sales in 2008 for $130,000.

No Evidence Needed, has since won five races and collected another four placings from her 14 career starts, thus repaying Tinkler in full.

Generosa descends from the unraced Danehill mare, Cousins who is the dam of the Hawkesbury Guineas winner Related (by Elusive Quality).

Later in the day, Shamardal chalked up an interstate double when Captain Sonador made a triumphant return to racing in the Salt Design Open Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

Ridden off the speed well back in the field, Captain Sonador’s class shone through as he rounded his rivals up with ease.

Out of Pushing Daisies (by Kenny’s Best Pal), a winner of three races and a half-sister to the stakes winner Umaline, Captain Sonador’s resume also features a third placing in the Group I Randwick Guineas and Group 2 Hobartville Stakes.

The result in the opening race, the Voodoo Plate (1100m) kicked the day of well for Darley as Reset’s daughter, Pinker Pinker took care of some of last season’s big name two-year-olds when the bay filly nailed the Voodoo Plate (1100m).

Pinker Pinker, according to trainer Greg Eurell, is slang for cash and the Cranbourne handler is hopeful that Saturday’s cheque of$45,750 will be the first of several spring paydays.

“I believe it’s a term for money, money, so let’s hope she gets more pinker pinker,” Eurell told Clark.

Pinker Pinker will target the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield in October and then the VRC Oaks if she is handling the preparation.

Pinker Pinker hails from a family that has produced the Group I WATC Karrakatta Plate and Group 3 VRC Tranquil Star Stakes winner, Golden Unicorn (by Jevington).

Purchased out of the 2009 William Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale by Eurell from the draft of Milford Thoroughbreds for $120,000, Pinker Pinker is one of the hundred plus winners by her sire.

Reset stands in Victoria at Darley’s Seymour property for a fee of $22,000 (inc gst), while, Shamardal, Commands and Street Cry stand at Darley’s Kelvinside property.  Both Shamardal and Commands stand for a fee of $66,000 (inc gst) and Street Cry’s fee is $137,500(inc gst) this spring.
