Former top Sydney galloper Oh Oklahoma has left his home state to stand at stud on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.
The Tim Martin trained son of Singspiel won both his two year old starts at Rosehill before a very courageous short head 2nd at Randwick, prompting some highly lucrative overseas offers. His owners’ aim however, was the AJC Derby with the STC Rosehill Guineas as a stepping stone.
In a field which included subsequent Group 1 winners Headturner and Testafiable and stakes winners Primus, Hotel Grand and Dream Ballad, Oh Oklahoma was posted wide throughout in the Rosehill Guineas, he gamely chased De Beers to within a neck, earning second place.
Contracting a virus the week before AJC Derby, Oh Oklahoma did not get another opportunity at Group 1 level and eventually retired with a knee chip, scoring another city win along the way.
Renowned for his movie star looks, Oh Oklahoma’s retirement to stud in the Hunter Valley happened to coincide with the outbreak of Equine Influenza. Despite this restricted start, he has produced some outstanding types, the oldest of which have just turned two years.
His sire Singspiel was the winner of four Group 1 races in three countries for Sheikh Mohammed. He died earlier this year, having sired 12 Group One winners including recently retired triple Gr.1 winner Dar Re Mi, Dubai World Cup winner Moon Ballad and Breeders Cup Fillies & Mare Turf winner, Lahudood.
Oh Oklahoma’s dam is a full sister to Canberra National Sprint winner Johnny Reb and a three quarter sister to AJC Australia Day Cup winner, Power of Pegasus.
The only son of Singspiel located in Victoria, Oh Oklahoma provides a great outcross for Danehill line mares. He will stand at David Houston’s Allan Hills Farm for a fee of $2750.
