The international racing community is turning its focus to Keeneland as it prepares to kick off its 67th annual September Yearling Sale on Sunday evening, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m (local).

Keeneland has catalogued 4,857 yearlings for the marathon 14-day sale – the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction – which runs through Sunday, Sept. 26.

To date this year, a total of 91 September Sales alumni have won 127 graded/group stakes. Among the Grade/Group 1 stakes winners are Zenyatta, winner of three Grade 1 stakes this year in her quest to capture a second consecutive Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1); Lookin At Lucky (Preakness-G1 and Izod Haskell Invitational-G1); Drosselmeyer (Belmont-G1); Afleet Express (Shadwell Travers-G1); Quality Road (Donn-G1, Woodward-G1 and Metropolitan-G1); Paddy O’Prado (Secretariat-G1); Dream Ahead (Darley Prix Morny-G1); Boys at Tosconova (Three Chimneys Hopful-G1); and Tell a Kelly (Darley Debutante-G1). 

“The September Sale attracts global attention because of the great success of our graduates, who continue to stamp themselves as extraordinary individuals,” said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s Director of Sales.

“Buyers know they can find a quantity of quality at every price range.”

This year’s sale features a format change, with 211 select yearlings catalogued in Book 1 to be sold during two evening sessions, held Sunday and Monday nights, Sept. 12-13, beginning at 7 p.m. ET.

A comprehensive Book 2 featuring 1,302 yearlings – roughly 325 horses per day presented in alphabetical order by dam – will sell Tuesday - Friday, Sept. 14-17. Sessions those days and throughout the remainder of the sale begin at 10 a.m.

Following a “dark” day on Saturday, Sept.18, the sale will resume on Sunday, Sept. 19 and continue through Sunday, Sept. 26. 

Impressive for the depth and breadth of its stallion roster, the September Sale offers yearlings by many of the world’s most sought-after sires as well as exciting young stallions. Yearlings by 294 stallions will be offered, with yearlings by 121 stallions catalogued during the sale’s opening week.

Yearlings by such established sires as A.P. Indy, Afleet Alex, Arch, Awesome Again, Candy Ride (ARG), Distorted Humor, Dynaformer, El Prado (IRE), Elusive Quality, Empire Maker, Ghostzapper, Giant’s Causeway, Green Desert, Indian Charlie, Kingmambo, Lemon Drop Kid, Malibu Moon, Medaglia d’Oro, Mineshaft, Mr. Greeley, Pulpit, Rahy, Seeking the Gold, Smart Strike, Speightstown, Storm Cat, Street Cry (IRE), Tapit,  Tale of the Cat, Tiznow and Unbridled’s Song, among others, will be offered.

Also catalogued are yearlings by such top young stallions as After Market, Any Given Saturday, Aragorn (IRE), Bernardini, Bluegrass Cat, Bob and John, Corinthian, Discreet Cat, Half Ours, Hard Spun, Invasor, Henny Hughes, Invasor (ARG), Jazil, Latent Heat, Lawyer Ron, Master Command, Political Force, Purim, Rockport Harbor, Scat Daddy, Silver Train, Stevie Wonderboy, Street Sense, Teuflesburg and War Front, among others.
