Racing returns to the inner city track Moonee Valley this weekend for another three stakes events with the feature being the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes.
The weight-for-age feature, run over a mile, has a rich history, and Saturday’s field features the recently crowned Horse of the Year, Typhoon Tracy.
The lone mare has seven male rivals that include an exciting four-year-old, trained by a wily Queenslander, and, a course specialist looking to break back into the winners’ enclosure.
Rain overnight and early Friday morning in Melbourne will ensure the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam (registered name: John F Feehan Stakes) is decided on a track with plenty of ‘juice’ in it and this should give the younger gelded, Shoot Out (ex Pentamerous by Pentire), a distinct advantage over his rivals with his fitness edge.

Whobegotyou
John Wallace trains, Shoot Out, who has already strung together two wins this preparation in the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) and the Group 2 J.J. Liston Stakes (1400m), before his latest effort when third in the Group 2 Memsie Stakes, won by So You Think.
Wallace took the son of High Chaparral across to Moonee Valley on Tuesday morning for his first look at the unique circuit, and despite his sluggish work, Wallace was upbeat about the four-year-old.
TVN’s Bruce Clark was at track work and caught up with Wallace, who advised viewers that Shoot Out ‘was having a look at the place’ and felt the gelding ‘will be okay when he’s got something to chase’ and was not overly worried about the work.
After all, he had yet to speak with his work rider, and, the instructions may have been ‘slow’ rather than ‘fast’.
TAB Sportsbet, futures betting has Shoot Out the early favourite showing odds of 7/4 ($2.80).
Whobegotyou (ex Temple of Peace by Carnegie) remained at Flemington under the watchful eye of his trainer Mark Kavanagh. A gallant runners-up effort to So You Think in the Memsie, a distinct love of the circuit, a brilliant competitor, he appeals at the 2/1 ($3) on offer.
I will trust his trainers judgement if the chestnut son of Street Cry runs on Saturday, especially, if conditions deteriorate.
Typhoon Tracy (ex Tracy’s Element by Last Tycoon), has a perfect two from two record at ‘The Valley’, although both of these victories were in her classic season, and is another showing at odds of 2/1.
Prepared by, Peter Moody, who has made no secret that the outstanding daughter of Red Ransom is going to be at her peak for the clubs showcase event, the G1 I Tatts Cox Plate, in six weeks time.
Sunline (Desert Sun ex Songline by Western Symphony), and Northerly (Serheed – North Bell by Bellwater), both won the Feehan Stakes before they went on to win the WS Cox Plate.
Sunline won the race on-route to her second WS Cox Plate and the Hong Kong Mile. While, Northerly won the event prior to a trio of wins at the elite level in the Underwood Stakes, Caulfield Stakes and his first Cox Plate which was won in dramatic fashion in 2001, when denying, Sunline a third win in the event.
Selections: – Whobegotyou (pedigree) (race record), Shoot Out and Typhoon Tracy.
