Past and present Westbury Stud stallions had a day to remember on Saturday with Faltaat, Captain Rio and Postponed all represented with winners while former barnmate Kilimanjaro was also in the winner’s circle.
The Paul Jenkins trained Oriental Lad (ex Bangkok Babe by Centro) notched his second success in four starts when he was a dominant winner of the $30,000 New Zealand Bloodstock R90 1200m in the first on the card at Ellerslie.
The Faltaat eight-year-old is raced by long-time Westbury Stud clients Peter Newsom, Tony Wales and Mac Whitehouse and has now won six of his 36 starts and stakes in excess of $100,000. Though he is in the twilight of his racing career Paul Jenkins noted after the win plans of retirement are nowhere in sight as he has continued to improve with age.
In the next race Captain Rio mare Art Beat (ex Artemesia by Peintre Celebre) made a winning return to the track after a four month layoff with a win in the $20,000 Te Hana Sparkling R70 1200 for Wayne and Vanessa Hillis.
Raced by Matamata identity Jim Marks, Art Beat raced against good company last preparation and appears to have improved with the break.
It was Captain Rio’s third winner in the last few days with the Mike Moroney trained Brazilian Pulse (ex Sharazad by Tenby) winning by a stunning seven lengths at Ballarat on Wednesday and Jan Hay’s Dr Dee Bee (ex Count the Steps by Geiger Counter) successful at Ashburton on Friday.
Down at Wanganui it was the turn of Postponed when the highly regarded Mr O’Ceirin (ex Cadell by Yachtie) made a winning debut in the hands of James McDonald.
The Wayne Keenan bred colt had performed at the trials and his owners had turned down considerable offers for him prior to Saturday.
Trainer Sandy Cookson said all things going to plan Mr O’Ceirin would step out in the Gr.3 Windsor Park Hawkes Bay Guineas on September 18.
The win was the second for Postponed in as many days with Missceo (ex Penny Whiting by Yachtie) from the Kevin Hughes barn posting her second victory in as many starts at Ashburton.
Former Westbury Stud resident Kilimanjaro made sure he was not forgotten when Mount Sinai (ex Kessem’s Jewel by Kessem) took out the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie. While not first past the post Mount Sinai won the race in the enquiry room after the stipes protested against the race’s victor Solid Steal.
