Australian Bloodstock has continued to blaze a trail of purchasing tried horses in Germany after acquiring a second runner form that country to complement last year’s Melbourne Cup placegetter Lucas Cranach (Mamool - Lots Of Love, by Java Gold).

Australian Bloodstock co-director Luke Murrell has announced the organisation has completed a deal to buy the German Group 3 winner Mawingo (Tertullian - Montfleur, by Sadler’s Wells) from his breeder Gestut Schlenderhan.

A three-year-old by northern hemisphere time, Mawingo has had five starts for a win in the Group 3 Bavarian Classic (2000m) at Munich before the colt finished fourth in the Group 1 Deutsches Derby (2400m) in July.

Mawingo had his last start for his original trainer Jens Hirschberger when he finished fifth in the Group 1 Premia Roma (2000m) at Cappanelle in Italy on November 6.

“Getting so close with Lucas Cranach showed us we were on the right track to getting a Melbourne Cup winner,” Murrell, who runs Australian Bloodstock with co-director Jamie Lovett, said.

“We have looked for a similar type of horse to Lucas Cranach because we think a good stayer with a strong turn of foot is the type that will be successful in the big cups next spring.

“With Lucas Cranach, we have two really good stayers to aim for next year’s Melbourne Cup, which is a great thrill.”

Murrell said Mawingo would arrive in Australia next month to join Victorian trainer Anthony Freedman, who also prepares Lucas Cranach.

Murell added Mawingo would probably make his Australian debut over the latter stages of the Sydney autumn carnival before heading north to qualify for the 2012 Caulfield and Melbourne Cup during the Brisbane winter carnival.
