Princess Arabella takes Sunland Oaks

Princess Arabella (3 f Any Given Saturday – Tortuga Lady, by Thunder Gulch) made a stunning stakes debut to takes Sunday’s Gr 3 $200,000 Sunland Oaks (1700m) in the USA by eight lengths.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Princess Arabella entered Sunday’s race unbeaten from two starts at Santa Anita Park and was sent off the heavy 1-5 favorite against her six rivals. She¬†went straight to the lead and was not headed, sailing home clear of Glinda The Good.

Princess Arabella won on debut December 31 with a strong victory at Santa Anita by three and one-half lengths. She followed that start with a seven furlong score on February 12 after which trainer Bob Baffert said, ‚ÄúI think Princess Arabella‚Äôs going to be better than Plum Pretty,” referring to Medaglia d’Oro’s G1 Kentucky Oaks-winning daughter who also took the Sunland Park Oaks in 2011. The two fillies share similar connections in owner Peachtree Stables.

Bred by Greenwich Cattle Company, Princess Arabella is out of Tortuga Lady, also the dam of Stakes winner and multiple Graded-placed Dyna’s Lassie. Tortuga Lady is a half-sister to Invisible Ink, who placed in the Gr 1 Kentucky Derby.

Princess Arabella is unbeaten in three starts and she is the second stakes winner for her sire.

Southern Skies for Any Given Saturday

Darley’s Victorian-based shuttle-sire Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) was represented by his first Australian winner at Ascot on Wednesday when Saturday Skies won the Westspeed 2yo Plate over 1000m

Jumping from the outside barrier, jockey Peter Knuckey  produced a masterful ride, managing to get the gelding across to the rails within the space of 200m. Saturday Skies found plenty in the straight and battled the whole way to hold out the challenges, eventually defeating Magic Halo (Danehill Express) by a half length.

Bred by Mrs K A Butler of Victoria, Saturday Skies sold for $30,000 as a yearling at the Magic Millions Adelaide Sale and is out of the Perugino mare Panaromic Skies and comes from the family Stakes winners Razor Blade, Sunburnt Land, Doubtful Jack and Exceed And Excels G1 performed daughter Curtana. Panaromic Skies has a yearling filly by Strategic and recently foaled a Domesday colt.

Any Given Saturday won six of his nine races, headed by victory in the G1 Haskell Invitational over nine furlongs and the G2 Dwyer Stakes over eight and a half furlongs. he has the stakes performed Sunday’s Child from his first-crop of Northern Hemisphere 2yo’s.

Treble up for Saturday

Darley shuttle-sire Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) was represented by his third winner when Brother Pat (2 c Anyhow, by Tiznow) strolled to success at Calder in Florida on Sunday. Brother Pat was wel back in the early stages of the one-mile contest before coming with a sweeping run into the straight to go away and score easily.

Any Given Saturday, whose oldest progeny are two, has also been represented by winners Ittasal in England and Saturday Launch at Ellis Park.

Winner of the Haskell Invitational (Gr 1), Any Given Saturday’s first Australian bred foals are two year-olds this season. He¬†stands at Northwood Park in Victoria at a fee of $13,750 (incl. GST).
