Danehill Dancer filly bounds into Oaks contention

Coolmore Stud stallion Danehill Dancer (Danehill – Mira Adonde, by Sharpen Up) may have another Oaks contender to represent him after the brilliant debut win of the Mick Kent-trained Summerbliss (Danehill Dancer – Distinctly, by Sadler’s Wells) at Ballarat.

Danehill Dancer sired the Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) winner in 2007 when Arapaho Miss (Danehill Dancer – Happy Heart, by Exit To Nowhere) claimed the Flemington event. Kent said Summerbliss would tackle the Victorian version of the three-year-old fillies’ classic at just her third start if things went to plan.

“She’s in the Oaks and hopefully we will head that way,” Kent said. “She will run in the Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield on Caulfield Cup day and go straight in.”

Summerbliss raced wide throughout the City Of Ballarat Maiden Plate (1600m) before overpowering her opposition in the straight to score by 1-3/4 lengths for Black Caviar’s breeder Rick Jamieson’s Gilgai Stud operation.

“She just keeps galloping. She’s always done it at home and I was actually pleased she was out deep and rolling,” Kent said.

“She’s never going to just sit and quicken, she’s just going to keep going and builds and builds and gets stronger. She’s got a really good, big action.  She’s out of a Sadler’s Wells mare and there’s a lot of Sadler’s Wells about her, I think.”

Summerbliss fetched $190,000 at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. She is the third winner from as many foals to race out of Distinctly, who is a sister to French Group 2 winner Moon Queen and Listed winner Rostroprovitch.

The mare is also a half-sister to the Champion 2YO of Italy in 1998, Barafamy, as well as the US Grade 2 winner Innuendo.

Summerbliss’s grand dam Infamy won the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes in England during her racing days.

Danehill Dancer has sired eight individual stakes winners out of Sadler’s Wells mares at distances up to 3200 metres.

Second Stakes win for Danehill Dancer filly

Duntle (Danehill Dancer – Lady Angola, by Lord At War), a daughter of Coolmore’s super stallion Danehill Dancer (Danehill – Mira Adonde, by Sharpen Up), notched her second successive Stakes win when she strode to victory in  the Group 3 Desmond Stakes (1m) at Leopardstown.

Duntle posted her first Stakes success in the Listed Sandringham Stakes (1m) during the Royal Ascot carnival before stepping out again five weeks later in the Desmond Stakes.

Terrible weather ensured soft conditions faced the eight runners in the Desmond Stakes. Riders kept their mounts well off the inside section of the course throughout the event.

The David Wachman-trained Duntle raced behind the leaders for the first 5 five furlongs of the race before jockey Wayne Lordan eased the filly into the clear rounding the home turn. Duntle took time to hit her top but finished her race in strong fashion in the testing ground to score by three-quarters of a length.

“She struggled a bit on the ground early on, but the last two furlongs are a bit better ground,” he said. “She picked up well from there and definitely prefers nicer conditions.”“She travelled well. Although the ground is not ideal early on it’s a bit better from the two furlong marker to the line,” jockey Wayne Lordan told Irish Racing.

“She’s done it ok, but will prefer better ground. Her heart is in the right place.”

Duntle is one of 141 individual Stakes winners sired by Danehill Dancer.

13 acceptors for Lawrence Stakes

A field of 13 will assemble for the first Victorian Group 2 race of the 2012/13 season when the runners face the starter for Saturday’s P B Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

The race, formerly known as the J J Liston Stakes, has traditionally provided a starting point for many spring contenders but Sydeston (St Briavels – Convatrice, by Convamore) was the last horse to complete the Liston Stakes / Caulfield Cup double in 1990.

The Perth-trained gelding Luckygray (Bradbury’s Luck – Damah Lady, by Mukaddamah) is the opening favourite with all bookmakers trading on the $220,000 event.

Moonee Valley invites Frankel to Cox Plate

The Moonee Valley Racing Club has invited 10 of the world’s best racehorses, including British superstar Frankel (Galileo – Kind, by Danehill), to tackle Australasia’s best weight-for-age horses in this year’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Frankel is unlikely to make the trip to Australia to compete in the Cox Plate despite the urgings of MVRC chairman Bob Scarborough, who suggested the Galileo (Sadler’s Wells – Urban Sea, by Miswaki) stallion’s connections follow Black Caviar’s example and travel across the globe to race.

“Frankel is widely regarded in the northern hemisphere as a once in a generation champion thoroughbred. All of his victories have been dominant, and he is clearly better than the current crop of UK middle distance horses,” Scarborough said.

“Just as Black Caviar has accepted the challenge to step out of her comfort zone and travel half way around the world to prove that she is without peer in the sprinting ranks at Royal Ascot, I am hopeful that the connections of Frankel will accept our invitation to travel to Melbourne to contest the Weight-For-Age Championship of the southern hemisphere.”

The MVRC consulted with Racing Victoria’s international scout Leigh Jordon before selecting the 10 horses that are eligible for an all expenses paid trip to Victoria. The full list of Cox Plate invitees is below.

One World to stud

Australian-bred, Hong Kong Group winning sprinter One World (Danehill Dancer) will stand at Neville Murdoch’s Larneuk Stud at Euroa in the North East of Victoria in 2012. His fee has been set at $6,600 incl GST.

The winner of over $HK14 million ($A2.26 million), One World scored his biggest career win in the Gr 2 Cathay Pacific Jockey Club Sprint (1200m) at Sha Tin  where he dead-heated with Rocket Man and defeating Sacred Kingdom.

One World was also placed in nine stakes races including the Gr 1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai and the Gr 1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Sprint.

“I had been looking for horse of the quality of One World for some time,‚Äù ¬†Murdoch on Tuesday. “We had been chasing this horse for some time and it was a great relief to finally get the deal done. With Danehill Dancer already a champion sire of two-year-olds and his son Choisir doing an outstanding job, One World is just the type of stallion the commercial market is looking for.”

One World

One World

“Not only is he an outstanding racehorse but he is from the pre-eminent Danehill sire-line from an Australian family synonymous with speed and class. Add to that the fact that he is an extremely handsome horse and he ticks all the boxes as far as a potential stallion is concerned.”

“He was extremely sound, he has international Group 1 form, has a pedigree to die for and is gorgeous to look at. I cannot wait to show the horse here at the farm and allow breeders to see him for themselves.”

Hot Snitzel is gutsy

Trainer Gerald Ryan aptly described Hot Snitzel as “a gutsy horse” after the son of Snitzel defied Manawanui in Saturday’s Gr 2 $175,000 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm. Hugh Bowman allowed Hot Snitzel to race prominently and shared the lead before the home straight.

Clear early in the final straight, Hot Snitzel (3 g Snitzel – Flames Of Paris, by Blushing Groom) ran on gamely to defeat¬†Manawanui (Oratorio), who ran on solidly in the final stages, with Moment Of Change (Barely A Moment), who shared the lead to the turn, sticking on well for third ahead of the fast finishing Rekindled Alliance (Redoute’s Choice).

“A good gutsy win but that’s what I’ve come to expect from him,”Ryan said. “He’s not top class but he’s a gutsy horse.”

“He’s come up bigger and stronger each time. We’ll keep placing him in races we think he can win and he’ll keep running well.”

“He’s ¬†a tough, genuine horse. I thought he’d run well first-up. He’s one of those horses that doesn’t disappoint you.” Bowman said of the winner.

The Group race for 3yo fillies on the card was won in similarly game fashion by the John O’Shea-trained Sea Siren (3 f Fastnet Rock – Express A Smile, by Success Express) who held off a late run from Streama (Stratum) to win the $175,000 Gr 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).

“We came here today very, very confident and Pumper rode her accordingly,” O’Shea’s stable foreman Bryce Heys said. “She’s a filly with a lot of quality and ability.”

O’Shea and Cassidy combined earlier in the day to win the Gr 2 $175,000 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Classic (1200m) with the improving Steps In Time (4 m Danehill Dancer – Rare Insight, by O’Reilly), who defeated an unlucky looking Beaded (Lonhro) by three-quarters of a length with Red Tracer (Dane Shadow) close up in third.

Steps In Time has been racing through the grades and yestrday was her first test in Group company.”Very good effort,” Heys said. “It obviously helped to have that fitness edge over those good mares.”

The Gr 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 24 at Rosehill was mentioned as a possible target for Steps In Time.

“That good residual fitness was a big plus.

Atomic Force favourite for Telegraph

Australian-trained sprinter Atomic Force (Danehill Dancer – Show Of Force, by Luskin Star) will shoot for his third Group 1 win in the past year when he takes on a big field in Saturday’s Telegraph Handicap (1200m) at Trentham in New Zealand.

Atomic Force won the Railway Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day with 58kg but must carry 1kg more if he is to complete New Zealand’s summer sprint double.

The Hombre (Lucky Owners – Atlanta Belle, by Defensive Play) finished a half-length behind Atomic Force when the pair last clashed. The John Bary-trained five-year-old will meet his last-start conqueror 2kg better at the weights on Saturday.

Coolmore men perform in Hong Kong

Coolmore sires continued their strong form in Hong Kong after the worldwide breeding operation’s past and present residents produced the winners of half of the 10-race card at Sha Tin on Sunday.

Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat – Yarn, by Mr Prospector) sired the first winner of the meeting when Honour List (Tale Of The Cat – A Real Dool, Proper Reality) claimed Tak Ku Ling Handicap (1200m). Ultimate Winners made it two from two for Coolmore sires when the four-year-old claimed the Nam Kok Handicap (1000m).

Former Coolmore Stud stallion Hawk Wing (Woodman – La Lorgnette, by Val de l’Orne) sired the winner of the South Wall Handicap (1600m) when Cai Bao In (Hawk Wing – Dazzling Park) posted a 1-3/4 length before Antonius Pius (Danzig – Catchascatchcan, by Pursuit Of Love) gelding All Victory (Antonius Pius – River Princess, by Victory Prince) easily won the Carpenter Handicap (1200m).

Way May Star (Fusaichi Pegasus – Skates) made it four winners for Coolmore-sired gallopers when the three-year-old won the Hau Wong Handicap (1400m).

Coolmore mainstays Danehill Dancer (Danehill – Mira Andonde, by Sharpen Up) and Encosta De Lago (Fairy King – Shoal Creek, by Fairy King) are prominent in the Hong Kong sires’ standings. Danehill Dancer is third on the General Sires’ list while Encosta De Lago sits a place lower.

Second Gr 1 success for Atomic Force

Newcastle-trained Atomic Force (6 g Danehill Dancer – Show Of Force, by Luskin Star) relished the soft going and proved too good for the New Zealand sprinters in Sunday’s $200,000 Blandford Lodge Railway Stakes (1200m) at Ellerslie.

Forced to race off the early pace by Nash Rawiller after a tardy start, Atomic Force looked full of running 400m out and he showed a dazzling turn of foot to sprint to the lead with 100m to go and ease clear of The Hombre (Lucky Owners) and score by half a length under the top-weight of 58kg. Twilight Savings (Secret Savings) finished 1 3/4 lengths away third.

‚ÄúIt was a bit average after the start but all honours to Nash, he didn’t panic. Everything was 110 percent with the horse,‚Äù winning trainer Darren Smith told Trackside TV.¬†‚ÄúIt couldn’t have worked out any better and I couldn’t be any prouder of the horse. The heavy track was perfect for him as were the conditions of the race.”

Rawiller praised the effort of Atomic Force who was slowly away.¬†”It wasn’t the plan but the worst thing you can do is panic.¬†I thought it was best to keep him balanced and he gave plenty in the straight.”

Smith said he would wait before deciding whether Atomic Force would stay on New Zealand for the Gr 1 Telegraph Handicap (1200m) at Trentham later in the month on January 21.

Three for Coolmore sires in Hong Kong

Coolmore Stud enjoyed a successful day at the Breeders’ Cup meeting in the US but also took its form to Hong Kong where its sires produced a winning treble on Saturday at Sha Tin.

Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat – Yarn, by Mr Prospector) started the Sha Tin meeting in good style for Coolmore sires when his son Super Goodies scored a half-length win in the Sun Wui Handicap (1200m).

Coolmore’s champion Danehill Dancer (Danehill – Mira Adonde, by Sharpen Up) produced the operation’s second Hong Kong winner on Saturday when the Ricky Yiu-trained Jade Christy (Danehill Dancer – Fandangles, by Centaine).

Jade Christy’s dam Fandangles (Centaine – Eastern Joy, by Three Legs) is from the same family as stakes winners Volksini (Volksraad – Indochine, by Grosvenor), Piachay (Danasinga – Pleasure, by Nassipour) and Utility (Flying Spur – Pleasure, by Nassipour).

Lightly-raced High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells – Kasora, by Darshaan) gelding Hear The Roar (High Chaparral – Talbya, by Mujtahid) completed Coolmore’s Hong Kong treble with his win in the Leighton Handicap (1800m).

“I think he will probably hold his own (in better class),” Hear The Roar’s trainer Sean Woods told the South China Morning Post. “He is only a young horse who had limited racing in England so we’ll look for him to improve a lot this year.”
