Sweet success in Macau

Australian-bred Dr Sweet (5 g King Cugat РRetro Chic, by Canny Lad) capped off a great weekend for trainer Gary Moore when he produced a superb front running effort under jockey Wil Pao to win the Group 2 Spring Trophy over 1400 metres at Taipa in Macau  on Saturday.

Dr Sweet defied all to hold on and win by a half a length from Lucky Jai (Noverre), with Easy Money (Falkirk) at 90/1 running in third.

The win gave hard working lightweight jockey Wil Pao his first Group victory in his 17 year career and assistant trainer Nick Moore was full of praise for him after the win.

“He did a great job off the front. The other horse (Easy Money) wanted to take him on but he handled it well.”

“He’s a hard working little guy and really deserves this, its great to help a battler who works so hard.” Gary Moore added.

Moore on 32 wins stretched his lead to four over Alan Tam on 28 victories after leading in four winners over the weekends racing.

Cup to Warrior Within

A rails run in the home straight enabled Warrior Within (King Cugat) to score an in yesterday’s $150,000 Grafton Cup (Listed) over 2350 metres.

Paul Hammersley positioned Warrior Within towards the rear and along the rail early on and he was still well back approaching the turn for home.  Staying near the inside into the straight Warrior Within was able to cut the corner through on the inside of Gold In Dubai (Desert Sun) to score by three-quarters of a length with Shuffle The Cash (Dash For Cash) staying on well for third.

Warrior Within is trained by Bruce Hill, who spent 10 years as foreman for Gerald Ryan before setting up his own stable. “Things worked out and I’m proud of the horse,” Hill said. “The firmer ground helped him. It’s brilliant.”

Hammersley admitted he was worried about Warrior Within’s ability to get the distance yesterday. “He struggles at the trip so I had to take an inside shortcut somewhere and luckily enough we got. This is the biggest Country Cup I have won so far. It is good to come here and finally have some luck for a change.”
