Antonius Pius on the board in 2YO ranks

Former Coolmore shuttler Antonius Pius (Danzig – Catchascatchcan, by Pursuit Of Love) earned his first two-year-old win of the season when Emperor Of Rome (Antonius Pius – Miss Tee, by Youthful Legs) scored at Tamworth on Monday.

Antonius Pius notched two stakes wins from just eight runners in 2010/11 but took one runner to record his first juvenile success of the season when his son took out the Hygain Romantic Dream Plate (1000m).

Emperor Of Rome’s victory came in the first NSW two-year-old race of the new season. The gelding scored a half-length win over Nikody (Bel Danoro – Polo Lounge, by Defensive Play) in the $12,000 race.

Roman Match (Antonius Pius – Flickering Fire, by Forest Glow) completed a double for Antonius Pius with her success in the Hygain Tracktorque Handicap (1200m).

Antonius Pius now stands at Highlands Farm in South Africa.

Another former Coolmore resident, Lion Heart (Tale Of The Cat – Satin Sunrise, by Mr Leader), also produced a winner at Tamworth when Big Cat Drummer (Lion Heart – Tambourine, by Danzero) took out the Hygain Release Handicap (1400m).

20 2YO winners for Exceed And Excel

The 20th juvenile win for the season for Exceed And Excel (Danehill – Patrona, by Lomond) has provided the highlight of Darley’s six-win Wednesday.

The Peter Snowden-trained Bello (Exceed And Excel – Cara Bella, by Seeking The Gold) brought up the figure for the sire when the gelding held off the fast-finishing Dynamic Honor (Dynaformer – Madcap, by Kingmambo) to win the Rosehill Gardens Event Centre Handicap (1200m) at Canterbury.

Exceed And Excel’s 2010 / 11 effort has been the most prolific of his four two-year-old crops to date, surpassing the stallion’s previous best juvenile tally of 19, achieved in the 2008/09 season. The sire’s best-performed son Helmet (Exceed And Excel – Accessories, by Singspiel) banked more than $600,000 for the stallion with wins in the Group 1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 AJC Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Bello formed part of a treble for Darley sires at Canterbury. Lycra Lass (Shamardal – Leggings, by Tights) won the Bacardi Bar Handicap (1550m) while Kaypers (Cape Cross – Miss Electra, by Zeditave) claimed the Grand Pavilion Handicap (1550m).

Capecover (Cape Cross – Set Up, by Zabeel) was successful at Sandown as was the Lonhro (Octagonal – Shadea, by Straight Strike) gelding Summarise (Lonhro – Material Girl, by Flying Spur). Summarise became just the second of Lonhro’s 215 individual winners to score over 2400 metres.

Simply Smart (Lonhro – Specie, by Canny Lad) completed Lonhro’s double and Darley’s sextet with his win in the www.brc.com.au Maiden Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm.

Old boys help Coolmore win five at Goulburn

A pair of former Coolmore Stud residents played a large part in helping the Hunter Valley operation produce five of the eight winners at Monday’s Goulburn meeting.

Coolmore’s champion sire Encosta De Lago (Fairy King – Shoal Creek, by Star Way) provided the backbone to the worldwide breeder’s quintet of successes. The well-bred Eucumbene (Encosta De Lago – Snowdrift, by Polish Precedent) opened the day strongly for the sire with his win in the Buriton @ Stuart Town Stud Maiden Plate (1300m).

Eucumbene is the eighth winner out of Snowdrift (Polish Precedent – Snowtop, by Thatching), who has also produced stakes-winning brothers Snowland and Snippetson (both Snippets – Snowland, by Polish Precedent). Christmas Island (Encosta De Lago – Quinsigimond, by Formidable) completed the sire’s double in the Niello @ Chatswood Stud Maiden Plate.

Lion Heart (Tale Of The Cat – Satin Sunrise, by Mr Leader) assisted his old home after A Roaring Success (Lion Heart – Bounding Again, by Twig Moss) scored a comprehensive win in the Shellscrape @ Wattle Grove Handicap (1200m). Coolmore sold Lion Heart to stand in Turkey in 2010.

Fasliyev (Nureyev – Mr P’s Princess, by Mr Prospector) also produced a winner for his previous owners when Forever Grateful (Fasliyev – Ma Belle Bonnie, by Grosvenor) took out the Burwood Stud Handicap (1600m). The dual hemisphere breeder sold Fasliyev to Yushun Stud in Japan in 2007.

Fusaichi Pegasus (Mr Prospector – Angel Fever, by Danzig) completed Coolmore’s handful of wins at Goulburn when Never Shout Never (Fusaichi Pegasus – Hummingbird, by Galileo) took out the Zupaone @ Hollylodge Maiden (1600m).
