Late Widden Stud stallion gets first Australian stakes winner

Gooree Bloodstock-owned youngster Never Can Tell (War Pass – Chalee, by Storm Bird) became the first Australian stakes winner for the late Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner War Pass (Cherokee Run – Vue, by Mr Prospector).

War Pass shuttled to Australia to stand for two seasons at Widden Stud with Never Can Tell emerging out of the sire’s first local crop.

Never Can Tell won over the Canonbury Stakes course on debut in October last year before handling the step up to stakes company comfortably, settling behind the early leader Whittington before the Anthony Cummings-trained colt proved too strong for the runner-up late.

Cummings said Never Can Tell will progress towards the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes.

“We’ll wander along towards the Slipper and find a nice race for him along the way,” said Anthony Cummings.

“He was pretty foolproof today. He took a lot out of his first preparation, where he was quite green.”
