Top-class New Zealander Mufhasa (Pentire - Sheila Cheval, by Mi Preferido) will shoot for his eighth win at the highest level in Saturday’s Group 1 Captain Cook Stakes (1600m) at Trentham.
Mufhasa broke through for his first Australian Group 1 win two starts back in the Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield in early October before a foot issue prevented the 16-time winner from taking his place in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) in November.
Mufhasa resumed from the slight setback with a brave second to Lady Chaparral (High Chaparral - Images by Gleam Machine) in the Group 3 Tauranga Stakes (1600m). Mufhasa’s trainer Steven McKee said the seven-year-old’s feet issues have settled as the gelding has aged.
“I was happy with him before Tauranga, the foot was no concern, and he’s looking good,” McKee said. “I’ve got no excuses for him and he’s going well.”
“He’s always had little niggles with mainly his front feet over the years, but they’ve all grown out and are more symmetrical and in proportion this year, so he’s been pain free, sounder, and he’s racing accordingly.”
Mufhasa will face nine rivals in the $NZ200,000 event. The Captain Cook Stakes field is below.

A rails run in the home straight enabled Warrior Within (King Cugat) to score an in yesterday’s $150,000 Grafton Cup (Listed) over 2350 metres.
Paul Hammersley positioned Warrior Within towards the rear and along the rail early on and he was still well back approaching the turn for home. Staying near the inside into the straight Warrior Within was able to cut the corner through on the inside of Gold In Dubai (Desert Sun) to score by three-quarters of a length with Shuffle The Cash (Dash For Cash) staying on well for third.
Warrior Within is trained by Bruce Hill, who spent 10 years as foreman for Gerald Ryan before setting up his own stable. “Things worked out and I’m proud of the horse,” Hill said. “The firmer ground helped him. It’s brilliant.”
Hammersley admitted he was worried about Warrior Within’s ability to get the distance yesterday. “He struggles at the trip so I had to take an inside shortcut somewhere and luckily enough we got. This is the biggest Country Cup I have won so far. It is good to come here and finally have some luck for a change.”

Danehill (Danzig – Razyana, by His Majesty) blood flowed through the veins of all of Australia’s two-year-old winners on Friday with sons of the immortal sire providing three juvenile successes while one of his grandsons also produced a winning youngster.
Danehill’s son Rock Of Gibraltar (Danehill – Offshore Boom, by Be My Guest) got the ball rolling for the former Coolmore superstar when his daughter Ruby’s Epic (Rock Of Gibraltar – Zugat, by King Cugat) took out the XXXX Gold 2YO Plate (1200m) at Grafton.
Exceed And Excel (Danehill – Patrona, by Lomond) got into the act when the Darley stallion produced Insurpassable (Exceed And Excel – Burning Embers, by Zoffany) to win the Bay FM Maiden Plate (1300m). Adding more merit to Insurpassable’s performance was the fact the colt beat older rivals easily in the $13,000 event.
Danehill’s Group 1-winning grandson Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice – Snippets’ Lass, by Snippets) and Group 1-winning son Fastnet Rock (Danehill – Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) completed the super sire’s monopoly on Friday when the pair shared success in the Arrowfield Stud Handicap (1280m) at Muswellbrook.
Fittingly, Arrowfield Stud’s sire shared the $30,000 feature when Flying Bay (Snitzel – Hula Flight, by Hula Town) dead-heated with Fastnet Rock’s representative Cindarockinrella (Fastnet Rock – Call Me Pretty, by Peaks And Valleys. Flying Bay is a daughter of the 1996 Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap winner Hula Flight (Hula Town – Solitary Flight, by The Expatriate).

Just three starts into the campaign, Devil Moon has stamped herself as one to watch in the major events of the 2007-08 campaign. She finished-up last Autumn with a hat-trick of wins in the H. C. Nitschke Stakes, Port Adelaide Guineas and Auraria Stakes (G3), before ending her year with a third in the Australian Oaks (G1), her first attempt at 2000m. This year after a first up run over 1200m., Devil Moon has added the Let’s Elope Stakes (G3) and W. H. Stocks Stakes (G2).

Devil Moon
Devil Moon is a member of the first Southern Hemisphere crop sired by King Cugat. An extremely well-bred horse – he is by Kingmambo out of a half-sister to Seeking the Gold – King Cugat was a stakes winner and multiple graded stakes placed on the turf at two, and the following year matured into the leading U.S. turf middle-distance performer of his generation. At that age he won five black-type events, including the Jamaica Handicap (G2), Bowling Green Handicap (G3), Arlington Classic (G3) and Crown Royal American Turf Stakes (G3), he also took second in four grade one events. In the Northern Hemisphere, King Cugat has three stakes winners from his first two crops: the Arlington Classic Stakes (G3) winner, Kingship; Display and Charlie Barley Stakes winner Seaside Retreat; and the El Cajon Stakes winner Latin Rhythms.
Devil Moon is out of the New Zealand-bred Classy Babe. This daughter of Masterclass, was a three time winner between 1100 and 1250m., and earned black-type with a third in the Port Adelaide Stakes. Classy Babe was half-sister to Skybeau, winner of the Rain Lover Stakes, two renewals of the Birthday Cup (G3), and also runner up in two runnings of the Adelaide Cup (G3). The grandam, Beaumont Babe – a daughter of Sky Diver – gained a graded win in the Escort Cup (G3), and is half-sister to the Irwin Stakes (G2) winner, Montrose Lass. We don’t find anything particularly outstanding in the next couple of generations of Devil Moon’s female line, but her sixth and seventh dams, Gold Flight and Francolin were major New Zealand tap-root mares. Among the notables descending from Gold Flight are Railway Handicap (G1) winners Ajasco and Silver Liner; South African grade one winners Hoeberg and Petrava; Metropolitan Handicap (G1) hero Victory Smile; and Australian Derby, VRC Oaks and Queensland Oaks victress Show Ego. Other stars descending from Francolin are Queensland Oaks winner Winnipeg; Loughanure, who took the Auckland Sires Produce Stakes; and Oakleigh Plate (G1) winner Turf Ruler and her Perth Cup winning son, Philomel.
Devil Moon is one of three stakes winners bred on the cross of Kingmambo and mares from the male-line of The Minstrel, the others being Kingmambo’s English group winning son, Governor Brown, and English listed winner Army of Angels, a son of King’s Best. It’s no surprise that this cross works well: The Minstrel has been a good foil for Mr. Prospector in general, and Kingmambo has also done well with mares descending from The Minstrel’s three-parts-brother, Nijinsky II, this cross producing group and grade one winners Tawqeet, Russian Rhythm, Alkaased and Rule of Law.
