Te Akau pay $NZ1.75 million for Fastnet Rock colt

Te Akau Racing David Ellis sparked the NZB Premier Sale into life on Tuesday afternoon when outlasting Coolmore for a colt by Fastnet Rock out of Nureyev’s Girl (USA) at $NZ1.75 million to top the sale.

Vendor Sir Patrick Hogan predicted the Cambridge Stud-consigned  colt to be the star of the show before selling started at Karaka this week and that’s how it played out with a heated bidding duel between underbidders Coolmore Stud and Ellis of Te Akau Stud.

The sixth seven-figure yearling ever bought by Ellis at Karaka, he admits he paid more than he expected he would. ”I did expect a high price for this colt, and I thought I would get him for about $1.5 million, but the others went beyond that. Demi O’Byrne is a world renowned judge of yearlings and he said this colt is the best he has seen at a sale in the last 10 years,”

“I wanted to secure him for the New Zealand racing and breeding industry, it is essential that we retain horses like this in New Zealand. He is an outstanding individual and the fact that he’s by such a great sire out of a Nureyev mare gives him the potential to win Group 1 races.

“He is already 90% sold with the remaining 10% to be sold this week and I don’t anticipate that will be very difficult to do. He will be trained by Jason Bridgman with a racing campaign intended to maximise his stud potential. If he’s as good as his sister we will be very happy.”

Earlier in the day Hong Kong-based agent Willy Leung outbid Wally Mitchell from Perth to sign at $800,000 for the three-quarter-brother to So You Think when buying the Windsor park Stud consigned colt by High Chaparral out of La Souvenir (Nuclear Freeze).

“We came here wanting to but a Derby type of horse and I was lucky to have two clients that wanted buy quality horses of this type.” Like his $650,000 High Chaparral purchase on the first day of the sale, Leung said the La Souvenir colt will remain in New Zealand to be broken and possibly race before a decision is made on his future.

Tale Of The Cat filly sells for $120,000

A Tale Of The Cat filly from Zakuro(Lot 211) is the new top-priced lot of the 2012 Classic Yearling Sale after she was knocked down to Les Bridge and Kim Harding for $120,000 on Monday. The half-sister to Randwick winner Zak, also trained by Bridge, was offered at the sale by Crowning Stone of Scone.

Choisir was selected from Classic as a yearling for just $55,000 before going onto Group 1 success at Flemington and Royal Ascot, and his filly  from Tagine (Lot 157) was picked up by Lockyer Thoroughbreds for $110,000 making her the second highest priced lot at the sale so far.

BC3 Thoroughbreds was extended to $100,000 to secure Lincoln Farm’s Ready’s Image - Topsinga colt (Lot 177) and Brett Howard’s Randwick Bloodstock saw off all the competition to purchase the Henrythenavigator - Coffee Shop filly (Lot 315) for $90,000 from Amarina Farm.

154 yearlings sold to gross $4.94 million on Monday and five yearlings selling for $100,000 or more. ”Classic has a great record of producing top class gallopers by young sires and it was very pleasing to see the progeny of first season sires such as Ready’s Image and Henrythenavigator being so sought after alongside the proven sires today,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

“Vendors have done a fantastic job presenting their yearlings in brilliant fashion and with the knowledge that Group One winners have been purchased at all different levels at Classic it has been great to see so many loyal buyers from around the region back buying at the sale,” said Inglis Auctioneer Jonathan D’Arcy

Easter Mare Sale changes

Inglis will again hold the Australian Easter Broodmare Sale in the week following ATC Derby Day at Randwick, but there will be changes to the format this year.

Inglis is introducing a new format which will see the sale split into three separate sessions from April 17 to 19, a Super Select Session, Select Session and General Session. Day One will see a Super Select Session of the best 200 fillies and mares entered for the sale.

“Local, interstate and overseas buyers, who have all been in Sydney for the Easter Yearling Sale and Australian Turf Club Autumn Carnival, will have the opportunity to bid on the best proven producers and breeding prospects that this region has to offer in one star studded Super Select Session”, said Inglis’ Jonathan D’Arcy.

“Inglis will again offer an outstanding commission rate of just 4% for mares selling for $150,000 or more and no pass in commission at the Easter Broodmare sale, plus we will sell the weanling progeny of any mare sold at Easter commission free at the Inglis Australian Weanling and Bloodstock Sale in June,” D’Arcy added.

The 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale will be conducted on Tuesday April 17 to Thursday April 19 at Newmarket Sydney. Entries close on Friday February 17

Day Two will comprise the next selection of Select Session mares with the market already buzzing from the highlights of Day One.

Day Three will round out the final day of the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale with the offering of mares entered in the General Session.

$750,000 for full-brother to Melito

The full-brother to Gr 1 winner Melito topped a strong day of trade on Friday at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale on Friday when selling to trainer Gerald Ryan for $750,000.

“There’s a lot to like about him,” Ryan said. ”He is very athletic and is a good mover. I wasn’t sure whether I’d buy him or not until I saw him out the back there just before he went into the ring. I looked at him and thought - he’s a good horse - just buy him, so I did.”

Redoute's Choice - Cloister colt

Redoute's Choice - Cloister colt

“Melito was a top mare for the stable and she’s now at stud and in foal. This bloke looks a more early type than his sister - so he could certainly be one for the race next year.”

Offered by Reavill Farm, the October 13 foaled colt is the eighth foal out of the Debutante Stakes winner Cloister (Marauding)

Gai Waterhouse and James Harron continued their buying with a number of top purchases today including the More Than Ready-Aqua D’Amore colt for $680,000.

Colts by Sebring (ex Valda Merceda for $450,000) and Fastnet Rock (ex Allow for $400,000) also proved popular with buyers.

The sale gross has now reached almost $52 million after three sessions at an average price of $127,684 for 407 lots sold with the  clearance rate at 84 per cent.

Today was pretty much like yesterday,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. ”There was some spirited bidding around the complex and it’s great to see the clearance rate at 84 per cent - that is quite phenomenal.”

“We’ve got a lovely line up in tomorrow night’s fourth session and hopefully that clearance will hold strongly.”

The fourth session of the sale will be held from 6pm (Qld time) Saturday following the $4.3 million Magic Millions Raceday at the neighbouring Gold Coast Turf Club.

Fastnet Rock colt sells for $960,000

The Magic Millions Yearling Sale has a new top-price lot after the second day of trade on the Gold Coast on Thursday when a colt by Fastnet Rock (lot 265) sold for $960,000. There was fierce competition for the colt, who was eventually knocked down to agent James Bester on behalf of Coolmore.

Coolmore’s Tom Magnier said he was delighted to be able to secure the colt, offered by Ian Smith’s Edinburgh Park. ”He is on fire at the moment,” Magnier said of Fastnet Rock.”James (Bester) and Demi (O’Byrne) absolutely loved the horse and they were raving about him all week.”

“We are really trying to get the good Fastnet Rock colts. He has plenty of quality and we really wanted to buy him. We knew there were plenty of people interested in him and we would have to do a bit of fighting to get him.”

Fastnet Rock - Rose Of Cimmaron colt

Fastnet Rock - Rose Of Cimmaron colt

The colt is out of the Sydney winner Rose of Cimmaron, a sister to Gr 3 winner Mica’s Pride, the dam of Gr 2 winner Varenna Miss. Rose Of Cimmaron is also a half-sister to this season’s Melbourne Stakes winner Amah Rock, a son of Fastnet Rock.

Another highlight of the session was when Gai Waterhouse and James Harron outlasted the Segenhoe Stud team to secure Strawberry Hill Stud’s More Than Ready filly from Sugar Babe for $600,000.

Some 11 yearlings sold for prices of $350,000 or more during today’s session where the yearlings averaged over $140,000. The sale gross is now over $33.5 million for 262 lots sold at an average price of $127,977,  up marginally on the figure after two sessions last year.

The clearance rate of 75 per cent yesterday has now risen to over 81 per cent for the sale.”We couldn’t be much happier with today’s proceedings,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. ”Competition was strong throughout the day and it was great to see some outstanding results for vendors from around the country.”

“To see the clearance rate at 81 per cent for the sale is terrific considering at the same stage of the sale last year we were hovering around 77 per cent.”

More Than Ready youngster flies at the Farm

The breeding cross is the same as Sebring (More Than Ready - Purespeed, by Flying Spur) as are his jockey’s silks and Raceway (More Than Ready - Claws (Flying Spur) took his first step to emulating Sebring with his win at Saturday’s Warwick Farm meeting.

Sebring retired to Widden Stud after five wins in six starts, including the 2008 Golden Slipper and AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes, for a syndicate formed by Star Thoroughbreds founder Denise Martin.

Raceway settled midfield early in the Warwick Farm 100 Club Plate (1000m) before unleashing a terrific turn of sprint to score an impressive debut win sporting the Star Thoroughbreds purple and white silks.

Martin paid $150,000 for Raceway at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. The exuberant syndicator expects to recoup her outlay on Raceway in the coming months.

“He’s a really good two-year-old. A really smart horse,” Martin said. “Half of the Sebring group are in this horse.”

Raceway’s jockey Hugh Bowman said he would do his best to stay aboard Raceway in the near future.

“He’s the nicest two-year-old I’ve ridden for quite some time,” Bowman said. “I had nothing to do with the horse before today but with a bit of luck I might have a bit more to do with him.”

More Than Ready was also represented by his 10th Gr 1 winner overnight when Gimmethegreenlight (3 c More Than Ready - Yes She Can Cancan, by Canny Lad) won the Queen’s Plate (1600m) at Kenilworth in South Africa. Gimmethegreenlight was purchased at the Magic Millions National Yearling sale for $155,000 from the Vinery Stud draft.

Destiny’s late dash

Sydney-visitor My Destiny (4 g Stratum - Grand Show, by Grand Lodge) produced a powerful finish to win the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday. My Destiny came with a big finish in the straight to defeat Ready To Rip (More Than Ready) by a neck with  Adebisi (Shovhog) a neck away third.

My Destiny’s win was overshadowed by a serious injury to high-class mare Zero Rock who had to be pulled out of the race by jockey Chris Munce shortly after the start. Early reports suggest Zero Rock may have sustained a career ending pelvis injury.

Trainer Con Karakatsanis set My Destiny on a path towards next month’s  Magic Millions Cup (1400m) at the Gold Coast but arrived earlier than planned after the four-year-old was balloted out of last week’s G2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

“He’s still very green and has a lot to learn.  He’s only had nine starts before this and he’s taken a while to put it all together,” Karakatsanis said.”His next run will be in the Magic Millions Cup if all goes well.”

Karakatsanis revealed My Destiny hasn’t been the easiest horse to train throughout his 10-start career. ”He’s had a lot of leg problems and isn’t the easiest horse to train and takes a lot of looking after. I think he’ll be a better horse on a bigger track than Doomben.”

More Vinery success for Price

Leading Caulfield trainer Mick Price continued his terrific record with progeny of Vinery Stud sires when Donovans (Testa Rossa - Malapert, by Encosta De Lago) posted a comfortable win in Friday’s Procon Developments Maiden (1200m) at Cranbourne.

Donovans made light of a wide barrier to become Price’s ninth success, and the second within six days, supplied by a Vinery Stud sire, including the stakes winners Testa My Patience (Testa Rossa - Entente Cordiale, by Jackson Square) and Proliferate (More Than Ready - Grand Prospect, by Flying Spur).

Donovans did not pass through a sales ring as a yearling. However, the four-year-old is a half-brother to the stakes winner Stokehouse (Anabaa - Malapert, by Encosta De Lago) and became the fourth winner from as many to race out of Malapert (Encosta De Lago - Brazenne, The Pug).

Vinery will offer a half-brother to Donovans by Excites (Danehill - Staging, by Success Express) at the upcoming 2012 Sydney Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

More Than Ready filly bound for Diamond

Vinery Stud sire More Than Ready (Southern Halo - Woodman’s Girl, by Woodman) could have a representative with a genuine winning hope in the upcoming Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) after Samaready’s impressive debut win at Flemington.

More Than Ready has produced Sebring (More Than Ready - Purespeed, by Flying Spur) and Phelan Ready (More Than Ready - Nancy Eleanor, by Blevic) to win the Group 1 Golden Slipper but Blue Diamond success has eluded the top juvenile sire.

Samaready (More Than Ready - Samar, by Secret Savings) raced handy to the speed early in the Spotless Plate (1000m) before extending strongly to score by 1-1/4 lengths. The win exceeded her trainer Mick Price’s expectations but he said he would now aim the filly at Victoria’s richest two-year-old race.

“I thought she might be a bit underdone,” Price said. “I thought she looked a little tubby in the mounting yard and I said to the guys if she was to win today there is a lot of improvement in her.

“But she’s very sound, not shin-sore, and her knees are good. She’s a genuinely good filly, she has a great temperament and I’m pointing her to the Blue Diamond.

“She has a very bright future. She’s a Blue Diamond filly for sure.”

Samaready’s dam Samar (Secret Savings - Nice Choice, by Touching Wood) has already produced a juvenile stakes winner from her four foals to race. Her daughter Night War (General Nediym - Samar, by Secret Savings) won last year’s Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) in Perth.

Testa Rossa mare to skip NZ Group 1s

Scone trainer has abandoned a New Zealand campaign for star mare Ortensia (Testa Rossa - Aerate’s Pick, by Picnicker).

Messara had enetered the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes winner for the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1200m) and Telegraph Handicap (1200m) double but a minor issue has forced him to shelve the trip.

“She’s had a minor setback but it is more a timing issue than the setback itself,” Messara told The Informant. “We couldn’t work her when we wanted to and she needed to have a strong gallop this week.

“That didn’t lead in to having her fit and ready to go so we’ve pulled the pin.”

Messara said Ortensia may have contracted a virus on the trip back to Scone after her Perth exertions but would be fit to race during the Melbourne autumn carnival.

“Plan B is probably to head towards one of the big races down in Melbourne,” Messara said. “One that Black Caviar isn’t in.”

2012 Inglis Australian Easter Preview

The lavishly produced Inglis Australian Easter Sale Preview was released on Monday at a function attended by the media, sponsors and some of Sydney’s leading trainers. The Preview is the culmination of long months of hard work and planning by the Inglis marketing team, spearheaded by Kate Anker and ably assisted by Adelaide Moses. As with all publishers the relief on their faces was evident, nothing feels better than to see ” your baby safely delivered”.
The front section contains official welcomes, useful information about the Sydney carnival generally and about the Inglis Easter sale in particular, some fine editorial contributions including articles on social media and an interview with significant new industry heavyweight Kevin Maloney as well as other useful information before leading into the sale preview itself.
And what a collection of riches it contains, like an Aladdin’s cave where every turning reveals a new glittering treasure. Starting with such gems as a full brother to So You Think, a Fastnet Rock half sister to King’s Rose and a Street Cry half brother to triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva it extends to significant numbers of yearlings by established champion sires Lonhro, Redoute’s Choice, Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur and Zabeel. Champion 2yo sire More Than Ready, new kid on the block Fastnet Rock and other old favourites are joined by a particularly well credentialled lot of first season sires.
The sale will be held at the company’s historic Newmarket complex at Randwick on the 10th, 11th and 12th of March. The magnificent “Big Stable” which features on the covers of the preview is sure to see plenty of action if thoroughbred sales around the world in 2011 are anything to go by.

Fastnet Rock filly tops NZB Ready To Run sale

Coolmore Stud’s Fastnet Rock’s (Danehill - Piccadilly Circus, Royal Academy) deeds during the spring have stimulated demand in the sire’s progeny with the stallion producing the top-priced lot at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready To Run Sale at Karaka.

The likes of  Group 1 1000 Guineas winner Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock - Regard, by Zabeel) and Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Mosheen (Fastnet Rock - Sumehra, by Stravinsky) have caused a surge in the stallion’s popularity.

Mosheen’s part-owner Phil Sly took his first opportunity to secure another of Fastnet Rock’s progeny. Sly paid $NZ450,000 for a Fastnet Rock filly out of the stakes-placed Centaine mare Shimo Star (Centaine - Yale, by Honourary Degree).

“She’s a stunner. She literally ticks all the boxes - there are 11 boxes to tick on my list and she ticks all of them. She breezed up beautifully and was very relaxed, she’s a real lady.

“She is the reason I am at the sale however I have made another purchase from Esker Lodge as well, they have done a great job of the preparation.”

Sales results such as that Lot 310 achieved underpinned the success of the NZB Ready To Run sale, which broke four records - the turnover, average, median and clearance rate marks.

Turnover rose $NZ2 million to more than $NZ16.2 million while the average price of $NZ71,125 was 29 percent better than the record set in 2007. The sale median was $NZ45,000, up 14.5 percent on the 2006 & 2009 record while the clearance rate hit 77 percent, four percent better than the 2006 mark.

“It’s been an incredibly strong Sale and we’re overwhelmed by the results. Yesterday was an encouraging start but today it stepped up another gear altogether,” New Zealand Bloodstock co-managing director Petrea Vela said.

“The buying bench is probably the largest we’ve ever seen at this Sale, and while it took some time to warm up yesterday, today we felt the full force of its strength and depth.”

Solid start to NZB Ready To Run sale

All key factors recorded a strong improvement on last year’s figures after the opening day of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready To Run Sale of two-year-olds at Karaka.

The first day of trading resembled a slow burn with many buyers keen to keep their hands in the pockets until later in the day, when the bidding roared into life.

Singapore-based Australian trainer Michael Freedman teamed with local bloodstock agent Michael Wallace to secure the top lot of the day when the duo paid $NZ320,000 to secure a Darci Brahma (Danehill - Grand Echezeaux, by Zabeel) gelding out of Golden Dawn (Gold Brose - Rapunzel, by Star Way). The juvenile is a half-brother to the WA stakes winner Bridgestone (Pentire - Golden Dawn, by Gold Brose)

Freedman has enjoyed success in Singapore with the Darci Brahma breed with the likes of Super Easy (Darci Brahma - Parfore, by Gold Brose) performing strongly in the Asian centre. Freedman also bought Super Easy at the NZB Ready To Run Sale.

“This horse genuinely reminded me of Super Easy 12 months ago,” Freedman said.

“In my opinion he was the pick of the Sale. I liked the way he breezed up, and the guys that own Super Easy also loved the look of him, so we’re very happy.

“He will stay in New Zealand at Henley Park for the next six to eight weeks before we take him up to Singapore.”

The clearance rate was a decent 72 percent, way up on last year’s 54 percent. The first day average of $NZ62,836 was more than $10,000 higher than the 2010 level while the $NZ6.723 million aggregate surpassed the opening session last year despite the fact the catalogue featured 70 less lots.

Instinction wins for Exceed And Excel at Flemington

The Mick Price-trained three-year-old Instinction (Exceed And Excel - De Lago Mist, by Encosta De Lago) provided the Darley sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill - Patrona, by Lomond) with his second stakes success of the Flemington carnival with his win in the Listed VRC Springtime Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

Juvenile filly Applegate (Exceed And Excel - Klamath Falls, by Storm Cat) scored a debut win at Listed level at Flemington on Tuesday before Instinction got up on the inside of the Paul Messara-trained Mahisara (More Than Ready - Darsini, by Danehill) to win narrowly.

Instinction became the 43rd individual stakes winner when the colt won his second race from six starts. Instinction followed in the footsteps of his stakes-winning dam De Lago Mist (Encosta De Lago - In The Mist, by Southern Appeal), who won the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 SAJC Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) as a juvenile.

Price combined with Blue Sky Thoroughbreds to secure Instinction for $300,000 out of the Three Bridges Thoroughbreds draft at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. The Caulfield trainer said the lightly-raced colt would relish the step up to 1600 metres in Saturday week’s Group 2 Sandown Guineas.

“We’re happy and he’s a nice horse so hopefully we can run him in the Sandown Guineas,” Price said.

“He’s had a solid run here but the Sandown Guineas was always going to be our target. Now that he has got a Listed race win, it gets his rating up and we can go in there with him and a mile will be beautiful for him. ”

Instinction foaled a colt by Fastnet Rock (Danehill - Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) in 2009 before the mare visited Redoute’s Choice (Danehill - Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad. The matings produced a colt in 2010 and a filly in 2011.

91st stakes winner for More Than Ready

Proliferate (More Than Ready - Grand Prospect, by Flying Spur) became the 91st individual stakes winner for Vinery Stud’s champion stallion More Than Ready (Southern Halo - Woodman’s Girl, by Woodman) with a game success in Thursday’s Listed Batman Handicap (1800m) at Flemington.

The Mick Price-trained colt made light of the jump from restricted class to stakes grade in the $150,000 feature. Proliferate settled behind the leader before gaining an inside run at the 300 metres, driving clear to score comfortably.

Price said he would recommend to Proliferate’s owner the colt be spelled with a view to testing the horse over staying trips as an autumn three-year-old. Proliferate is a half-brother to Grand Journey (Good Journey - Grand Prospect, by Flying Spur), who won a Group 1 WATC Derby (2400m) in Perth.

“He was actually bred to get a trip and he is a half (brother) to a filly who won the WATC Derby, Grand Journey,” Price said. “If you have a look at him in the yard, he is a real staying type of colt with a big long neck on him, clean winded.

“I think we’ll put him out and he’ll get to the AJC Derby route unless the owners jump up and down and want to run him in the Sandown Guineas but he is a horse with a future as a winner.”

Proliferate is bred on the same More Than Ready / Flying Spur (Danehill) cross as the 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring (More Than Ready - Purespeed, by Flying Spur). The More Than Ready / Danehill cross has also produced Derby winners Dreamaway (More Than Ready - Legal Consent, by Danehill) and Benicio (More Than Ready - Mannington, by Danehill).

Meanwhile, the classy Testa Rossa (Perugino - Bo Dapper, by Sir Dapper) mare Ortensia (Testa Rossa - Aerate’s Pick, by Picnicker) made a fine start to the second phase of her career with a strong win in the Listed Begonia Belle Stakes (1100m).
