O'Reilly
An outstanding finishing burst has enabled two-year-old filly Pussy Willow (O’Reilly - Octapussy, by Octagonal) to become the 53rd individual stakes winner for Waikato Stud sire O’Reilly (Last Tycoon - Courtza, by Pompeii Court) in the Group Challenge Stakes (1200m) at Trentham.
Pussy Willow made her ride Samantha Spratt earn every cent of her riding fee after racing greenly for the first three-quarters of the race before the two-start veteran found her groove with 200 metres to run. Pussy Willow made light of a six-length deficit at the 200 metres to score by a half-length over Hazel (Handsome Ransom - Elfonze, by Krasnopolski).
Pussy Willow failed to reach her $250,000 reserve at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale but her two wins have returned her owners, Sir Patrick Hogan and Lady Justine Hogan and Peter Walker, more than $NZ50,000 with the promise of much more to come. The trio will offer a half-sister to Pussy Willow at the upcoming NZB Premier Sale.
Pussy Willow’s trained Steven McKee said Pussy Willow’s early waywardness was no surprise to him.
“That’s sort of what I expected,” Ardmore trainer Stephen McKee said. “I thought she might get lost over the crossing and she pretty much did, but she’s absolute top class.”
O’Reilly enjoyed more juvenile success across the Tasman Sea when the Danny O’Brien-trained Shamexpress (O’Reilly - Volkrose, by Volksraad) posted a four-length win in the opening event at Flemington.
O’Brien paid $130,000 for Shamexpress at the 2011 NZB Premier Sale and expects the colt to perform at a higher level over more ground during his three-year-old season.

Vinery’s Group 1 winning stallion Excites (Danewin) produced an exciting winner at Canterbury on Wednesday when Scream Machine (3 g Excites - Sevillano, by Octagonal) charged home to win the $27,000 Australian Turf Club Maiden (1550m).
Trainer Jason Coyle has always had a high opinion of Scream Machine, who came with a strong sprint in the straight for Adam Hyeronimus to defeat the Darley runner Tramp (Commands) in the final strides. Urban Rocker (Fastnet Rock) finished third.
“He had an awkward barrier and Adam rode him a treat. I really think he is a Brisbane Carnival horse. We will take him home and see how he pulls up and decide if we go for a bit of a break or if we step him up to the next grade,” said Coyle.
“The horse has got a lot of ability and today he has just done it on natural ability, and as the distances get on he will just get better,” said Hyeronimus.
Scream Machine cost $13,000 as a yearling from the draft of Edinglassie Stud at the 2010 Magic Million Gold Coast Sale.

Outstanding sprinter Rain Affair (Commands - I Believe, by Octagonal) has provided his sire with a second Stakes success in the space of 18 hours with his win in Monday’s Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Warwick Farm.
Queen’s Command (Commands - Judicial Queen, by Unbridled’s Song) took out the Group 3 Flamboyant Stakes (1600m) at Greyville in South Africa. Rain Affair went straight to the front before winning the $100,000 race in a decisive manner, despite his trainer Joe Pride’s complaints about the firm Warwick Farm surface.
“I don’t like running my horses on tracks like that. I felt a bit of pressure this morning and I considered pulling him out but he had to run,” Pride said.
“I think he’s got a big race written all over him. This is a great horse. This horse is destined for big things but I’m going to be very judicious about how I place him.
“It’s very much an open plan. I don’t want to commit to anything because I’ll be guided by what the horse is doing and what he’s showing me.
“I think he’s as good a horse as any horse in the country on a wet track it just remains to be seen whether he’s that good when he’s on dry tracks.”
The Carrington Stakes was Rain Affair’s eighth from nine starts and his second stakes success.

A wide run failed to stop the Gai Waterhouse-trained Kontiki Park (Thorn Park - Pretty Special, by Octagonal) claiming Saturday’s Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) at Doomben.
Kontiki Park raced three and four-wide for most of the $100,000 race but fought gamely under the urgings of jockey Tommy Berry to prevail in a driving finish.
Kontiki Park fetched $150,000 at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast but Waterhouse’s stable foreman Neville Auld said the 1800-metre Magic Millions Stayers’ Cup would suit the son of Thorn Park (Spinning World - Joy, by Bluebird) perfectly.
“He’s a lovely big horse who tries his heart out every time,” Waterhouse’s foreman Neville Auld told AAP.
“He likes to settle and relax in his races and the extra 200 metres at the Gold Coast will be perfect for him.”
Kontiki Park became the 13th individual stakes winner for Windsor Park Stud resident Thorn Park.
Inglis will offer a half-brother to Kontiki Park at the upcoming Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Bowness Stud will offer the colt, which is by Patinack Farm stallion Beautiful Crown (Chief’s Crown - Beautiful Glass, by Pass The Glass).

On the day Commands sired an impressive juvenile winner at Betfair Park in Melbourne came news that he will not be shuttling to Japan in 2012.
The Peter Snowden-trained 2yo colt Dispatch (Commands - Depeche, by Octagonal) looked good defeating Isle of Dreams in the Hylands Race Colours handicap (1200m). “He’s very tough, he’s shown that at home, you can’t really hurt him too much and he’s definitely going to improve from today. He’s always shown ability, Dad’s always had a good opinion of him, and obviously that’s shone through today.” Melbourne stable foreman Paul Snowden said.
Darley yesterday announced the stud fees for its five stallions that will stand in Japan for the 2012 breeding season, with Commands not on the list for next year. Triple G1-winning Horse of the Year Admire Moon has sired two graded race winners, Leo Active and Fine Choice, from his first crop and will head the roster at a fee of ¥4.0m.
The first crop foals of Champion Deep Sky and record-breaking G1 miler Pyro are tremendous. Deep Sky’s foals have been particularly well-received and averaged ¥24.8m at the sales. Deep Sky and Pyro will stand for ¥2.5m and ¥1.5m respectively.
Shotaro Kajiya, Darley’s nominations manager, said, “We are pleased to announce the fees of our five stallions for 2012. Our roster offers exceptional quality and value and we look forward to talking to our clients in the coming months.”
The fees for Darley’s 2012 stallions are as follows;
Admire Moon. End Sweep – My Katies (Sunday Silence) ¥4.0million
Deep Sky. Agnes Tachyon – Abi (Chief’s Crown) ¥2.5million

Storming Home. Machiavellian – Try to Catch Me (Shareef Dancer) ¥1.5million
Xaar. Zafonic – Monroe (Sir Ivor) ¥0.5million

Trainer Peter Snowden produced two promising looking juvenile’s at Monday’s Cranbourne Barrier Trials.
Both are Darley homebreds and both won their respective heats. Commands colt Dispatch (2 c Commands - Depeche, by Octagonal) defeated the Robbie Griffiths-trained General Hap by a neck to claim the colts and geldings’ 800m trial in 48.23 on a track rated ‘Slow’.
Inbred to the great mare Eight Carat, Dispatch is closely related to the stakes winner Marching, also by Commands and is from from the same family as Group I winner Crawl.
Harpers (2 f Exceed And Excel - Media, by Gilded Time) won the two-year-old fillies’ heat in a time of 51.12 seconds, nearly two and a half seconds slower than her stablemate.
Harpers is out of Media, winner of the Gimcrack Stakes and the Gr 2 Magic Night Stakes as a juvenile. Media is a half-sister to the Group 2 winner Timbourina and the stakes winning sprinter Cardinal Virtue.

Darley announced its Northern Hemisphere fees on Friday with Lonhro (Octagonal) set to stand for $US30,000 at Jonabell Farm in 2012. In England, Exceed And Excel (Danehill) will stand for £22,500, Dubawi at £75,000 and Shamardal at €50,000
The Kentucky roster will be led by Bernardini ($150,000) and Street Cry ($150,000), both of whom stand in Australia this season. Charlie Boden, Darley’s Head of Sales said, “2012 is going to be an exciting year. Bernardini is a young horse we are so proud of and he is proving to be truly world-class. Our other top stallions Elusive Quality, Medaglia d’Oro and Street Cry will be joined by Australia’s reigning Champion sire, Lonhro who has been so well received since we announced him just last month.”
“We can’t wait to show him to breeders in January. Of our four freshmen who have started so well, Hard Spun deserves special mention. He’s leading the table by Stakes winners and we look forward to all of their three-year-olds in 2012.”
Sam Bullard, Darley’s director of stallions in Europe said, “We have a wonderful line up of stallions and their achievements this year have been outstanding. Our elite stallions Dubawi, Shamardal and Cape Cross continue to sire G1 winners each and every year.

Former super staying mare Makybe Diva (Desert King - Tugela, by Riverman) became a winning broodmare for the first time when her son Rockstardom (Galileo - Makybe Diva, by Desert King) broke through at Bendigo on Thursday.
Rockstardom fetched $1.5 million at the 2009 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. However, the son of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells - Urban Sea, by Miswaki) failed to win in seven starts as a colt before connections made the tough decision to geld the high-price purchase.
Rockstardom stepped out for his first run as a four-year-old in the Jayco Maiden Plate (1600m). The leggy bay settled off the pace before wearing down the Peter Moody-trained Daley (Carnegie - Jordanamanda, by Johan Cruyff) to win by a nose.
Rockstardom’s jockey Mark Zahra said the Danny O’Brien-trained gelding would improve with extra distance and plenty of race experience.
“He is probably going to be better over a trip,” winning rider Mark Zahra said. “I rode him very comfy and let him finish off.
“He was pretty good, my guy, he was first-up at a mile and he was strong late.
“He probably hasn’t done a bad job. He was held up at the top of the straight. The further the better for him.”
Rockstardom is the first of two foals to race out of Makybe Diva. La Dolce Diva (Fusaichi Pegasus - Maybe Diva, by Desert King) has had four unsuccessful starts for the Mark Kavanagh stable.
Makybe Diva foaled a colt by Encosta De Lago (Fairy King - Shoal Creek, by Star Way) in 2009 as well as a colt by Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) earlier this year.

Impressive filly Applegate (Exceed And Excel - Klamath Falls, by Storm Cat) became the 42nd individual stakes winner for Darley sire Exceed And Excel (Danehill - Patrona, by Lomond) with her win in the Listed Ottowa Stakes (1000m) at Tuesday’s Flemington meeting.
The Darley homebred settled off the pace before producing a smooth turn of foot to reel in the Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice - Snippets’ Lass, by Snippets) filly Snitzerland (Snitzel - Monte Rosa, by Fraar) to win by a head.
Winning trainer Peter Snowden said he would aim Applegate at the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in the autumn.
“The timing is right to give her a break now,” Snowden said. “She is obviously a talented filly and we’ll have a look at something like the Blue Diamond.”
Sons of Danehill (Danzig - Razyana, by His Majesty) provided all three placegetters when the Redoute’s Choice (Danehill - Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad) two-year-old Rhandara (Redoute’s Choice - Bhandara, by Zabeel) worked home well for third.
Applegate provided Exceed And Excel with his first juvenile win of the season. Darley sires Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) and Commands (Danehill - Cotehele House, by My Swanee) have already produced two-year-old stakes winners this season.
Applegate is the second stakes winner for the Storm Cat mare Klamath Falls (Storm Cat - Link River, by Gone West) after Yulalona (Dubai Destination - Klamath Falls, by Storm Cat) won the Listed Dulcify Quality (1800m) as a three-year-old.

Champion sire Encosta De Lago (Fairy King - Shoal Creek, by Star Way) will continue his largely single-handed battled against the Darley line-up over the famous four-day Flemington carnival.
Encosta De Lago has led the Coolmore charge over the last three Flemington carnivals with 11 winners. The Coolmore mainstay has sired eight more winners at Victoria’s showpiece racing festival than his nearest rivals, Darley’s Fantastic Light (Rahy - Jood, by Nijinsky II), Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) and Reset (Zabeel - Assertive Lass, by Zeditave).
Arrowfield Stud’s super sire Redoute’s Choice (Danehill - Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad) has also sired the winners of three races across the past three Flemington spring carnivals.
Encosta De Lago has seven representatives among the 196 nominations for Saturday’s opening day of the 2011 Flemington spring carnival.
The sire has two sons entered in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) with the Mick Price-trained Costly Commitment (Encosta De Lago - Mutate, by Octagonal) and Sydney three-year-old Niagara (Encosta De Lago - River Song, by Fusaichi Pegasus) to fly the Coolmore flag.

Swettenham Stud stallions made a lightning start to Tuesday’s Kyneton meeting with winners in the first two races of the day.
Keep The Faith (Sunday Silence - Duelling Girl, by Dayjur) got the day under way for Swettenham Stud with his success in the Hanging Rock Winery Maiden Plate (1887m). The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained filly That’s What I Want (Dash For Cash - Coversinga, by Danasinga) completed Swettenham’s double with her win in the TVN Maiden Plate (1118m).
The smart debutant became Ellerton and Zahra’s 14th winner of the season with her half-length success in the $12,000 race. The Flemington stable has done their part to support the local breeders with Victorian-based stallions providing half of the operation’s wins this season.
Meanwhile, the $300,000 yearling Instinction (Exceed And Excel - Delago Mist, by Encosta De Lago) cast aside his maiden status at his fourth attempt with a win in the Glen Erin Group Maiden Plate (1479m) at Kyneton. The Mick Price-trained colt began a double for Darley sires with his success.
The Peter Snowden-trained Cliques (Commands - Factional, by Octagonal) became the second leg of the Darley double with her win over older rivals in the NMIT Handicap (1479m).
The two sons of Danehill (Danzig - Razyana, by His Majesty) have sired the winners of 91 races between them with Commands (Danehill - Cotehele House, by My Swanee) producing 58 of those.

Two outstanding racehorses combined to produce a smart maiden winner when the Peter Moody-trained Soros (Lonhro - Bonanova, by Star Way) won stylishly at Seymour on Sunday.
Soros came from a midfield position to win the www.racingnetwork.com.au Maiden Plate (1300m). The colt, owned in the same interests as the former Australian Racehorse Of The Year Typhoon Tracy (Red Ransom - Princess Tracy, by Last Tycoon), won the $20,000 race at his first start.
Soros was withdrawn from the Vinery Stud draft at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Sale.
His sire, Darley resident Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike), was a former Australian Racehorse Of The Year himself as well as last season’s Australian Champion Stallion. Bonanova’s (Star Way - St Klaire, Bletchingly) eight wins included the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) in 1999.
Bonanova has been a successful broodmare in her own right, foaling stakes winners Bonaichi (Fusaichi Pegasus - Bonanova, by Star Way) and Prima Nova (Danehill Dancer - Bonanova, by Star Way).
Soros’s win completed a double for Darley sires at the Seymour Cup meeting. The Peter Snowden-trained Gig (Commands - Busking, by Encosta De Lago) won the opening race of the day, the Railway Club Hotel Maiden Plate (1200m).

Reigning Champion Australian sire Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) is to shuttle to North America in 2012. “Lonhro is a rare thoroughbred, a Horse of the Year on the racetrack and then a champion sire,” Sheikh Mohammed’s bloodstock advisor John Ferguson said.

Lonhro has totally rewarded our faith in the southern hemisphere and we believe he will be perfect for mares in the northern hemisphere and a real asset to breeders.”
Lonhro was Australia’s Champion sire in 2010-11 with four crops of racing age, headed by Group I winners Beaded, Benfica and Denman.
No fee has been set.

Coolmore Stud sires have three chances to earn the worldwide operation’s second Group 1 win of the season in Saturday’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield.
Irish bred Oratorio (Danehill - Mahrah, by Vaguely Noble) provided Coolmore’s first Australian Group 1 winner of the season when Manawanui (Oratorio - Lady Remlap, by Filante) romped home to win the Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill.
NSW four-year-old Torio’s Quest (Oratorio - Quest For Pleasure, by Quest For Fame) will represent the young sire in the $350,000 race. Torio’s Quest won the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) before a narrow second in the Group 2 Sebring Sprint (1300m) at his spring debut on September 10.

Darley sires Domesday (Red Ransom - In The Past, by Zafonic) and Dubawi (Dubai Millennium - Zomaradah, by Deploy) have combined to produce a Group 1 double at Saturday’s Sydney spring carnival showpiece meeting at Randwick.
Doctor Doom (Domesday - Orcym, by Orpen) started the Darley double after the Guy Walter-trained three-year-old led throughout to claim the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m). Doctor Doom became Domesday’s fifth stakes winner and second Group 1 victor with his brave win but Walter said Doctor Doom would wait until the autumn to build on his record.
“He’s behaved like a good horse this fellow,” Walter said. “The more I work him the more he eats. He’s got a big future.
“He definitely goes for a spell now. We’ll bring him back in the autumn and look at races like the Randwick Guineas and Rosehill Guineas.”
Secret Admirer (Dubawi - Secret Illusion, by Secret Savings) posted the second Group 1 win of her short career after storming home to claim the Epsom Handicap (1600m) at her eighth start.
The Grahame Begg-trained mare produced a similar performance to win the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at the big Randwick meeting last year. Begg said he would give Secret Admirer a chance against the best gallopers in training during the Melbourne Spring carnival.
Reset (Zabeel - Assertive Lass, by Zeditave) mare Pinker Pinker (Reset - Miss Marion, by Success Express) completed an Epsom Handicap double for Darley sires after the mare battled strongly to finish second.
Earlier, promising colt Pierro (Lonhro - Miss Right Note, by Daylami) started Lonhro’s (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) juvenile season in good style with a win in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m).
Pierro’s head win made the colt Lonhro’s 31st individual stakes winner. The youngster’s trainer Gai Waterhouse declared Pierro would be the “Golden Slipper” winner.

Consistent Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) gelding Pinwheel (Lonhro - Quilt, by Danehill) heads the weights for Saturday’s Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.
The Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) winner will carry 58kg if his trainer Peter Snowden decides to run the six-year-old in the $350,000 feature, half a kilo more than the Queensland gelding Woorim (Show A Heart - Wabble, by Canadian Silver).
Another son of Show A Heart (Brave Warrior - Miss Sandman, by Regal Advice), the Rick Hore-Lacy-trained Toorak Toff (Show A Heart - Orrong, by Grand Lodge), will carry 56.5kg for his attempt at a second Group 1 win.

Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings has provided the most interesting nomination after entering the Group 1 Golden Rose runner-up Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock - Comical Smile, by Comic Strip) for the race.
Smart Missile is one of a trio of three-year-olds entered for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes along with Patinack Farm’s Kneeling (Encosta De Lago - Sunday Service, by Sunday Silence) and Golden Archer (Rock Of Gibraltar - Viennetta, by Pins).

The emerging mare Raspberries (Lonhro - La Melba, by Grand Lodge) became the 29th individual stakeswinner for Darley’s prolific stallion Lonhro (Octagonal - Shadea, by Straight Strike) with her win in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle.
Raspberries produced a brave performance to earn herself an exemption from the ballot in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on October 1.
“She is just one of those horses that has taken a quantum leap,” Raspberries’s trainer Peter Snowden said.
“Last time in she was struggling to win a maiden then, all of a sudden; she hit form and went right through.
“These sort of horses, you don’t put a lid on them. You just aim them at the right races. I would say a mile is perfect for her but I wouldn’t say she couldn’t win at any distance really.”
Raspberries’s Cameron Handicap success was the third stakes winner for Lonhro for the season and the sire’s 18th win of the2011/12 term.
Commands (Danehill - Cotehele House, by My Swanee) filly Jester’s Girl (Commands - How Funny, by Rory’s Jester) completed a Newcastle double for Darley sires with her win in the Executive Inn Newcastle Maiden (900m).
