14 accept for Cox Stakes at Ascot

The Patinack Farm-owned Saint Encosta (Encosta De Lago - St Katherine, by Barathea) is the sole eastern states representative in the Cox Stakes. The five-year-old earned the right to press on to the Perth Cup with his eye-catching second in the Listed J R A Trophy at Ascot on December 3.

The J R A Trophy winner Veracious (Systematic - Royal Lace, by Serheed) is not among the Cox Stakes acceptors but Saint Encosta will clash again with the fourth placegetter Double Barrel (Musketeer - Irwind, by Haulpak).

UK Group 2 winner available to stand at stud

A WA-based syndicator is offering studs the chance to stand a UK Group II winner at stud in Australia next season.

Belhus Racing will give breeders the chance to secure the well-bred stallion Illustrious Blue (Dansili - Gipsy Moth, by Efisio) to stand at their stud on either a sale or lease arrangement.

The stallion won the Group 2 Goodwood Cup (3219m) in July last year before UK trainer William Knight travelled the stayer to Australia to compete in the 2010 when Illustrious Blue finished ninth.

Belhus Racing boss Peter Morley said Illustrious Blue outstayed his breeding, which would be a perfect miler’s pedigree in Australia.

First three Dansili sires to go to stud, including Goodwood Vintage Stakes winner Strategic Prince (Dansili - Ausherra, by Diesis), had first crop juvenile winners in Europe in 2011.

Morley said Illustrious Blue is bred along similar lines as the European champion juvenile and Eliza Park Stu shuttle sire Bushranger (Danetime - Danz Danz, by Efisio).

“Illustrious Blue’s Danehill genes and blend of good speed and stamina suggest he could be a valuable sire for Australia’s brilliant mares,” Morley said.

Interested parties can contact Morley via phone on 0408 911 122 or email at peter@belhusracing.com.au

Playing God goes back to back

Playing God (4 h Blackfriars – Dolly Will Do, by Rubiton) went back-to-back in the Gr 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot on Saturday, putting two recent disappointing efforts behind him with a classy display.

Ridden as usual by Steven Parnham, Playing God spent the first half of the race camped just behind the leaders and out of trouble. Into the straight and Playing God sprinted to the front, eventually defeating the fast-finishing Ranger (Testa Rossa) by a length with the three-year-old King Saul (Flying Pegasus) running on solidly in third.

“It seems everyone had written him off bar me.” an emotionalNeville  Parnham said later, adding that Playing God would now be spelled and be aimed at another campaign in Melbourne during the Autumn.

“We probably expected too much from in the Railway,” Parnham said. “Top-weights don’t have a good record in the race and he had the sprint taken out of his legs in the Group 1 races in Melbourne. I just asked Steven to ride him in the same position as last year - one-one - and it worked.”

15 accept for Kingston Town Classic

A field of 15 has accepted for Saturday’s Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot, which is the final Group 1 race in Australia for 2011.

Australia and New Zealand have hosted 31 Group 1 races to date this season. Fastnet Rock (Danehill - Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) has produced the winners of four Group 1 race in the first half of the 2011/12 term but does not have a runner in the Kingston Town Classic.

Vinery Stud stallion Testa Rossa (Perugino - Bo Dapper, by Sir Dapper) has the chance to win his second Perth Group 1 race in a fortnight. Ortensia (Testa Rossa - Aerate’s Pick, by Picnicker) claimed the newly-promoted Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) while Ranger can atone for a luckless Railway Stakes run in the Kingston Town Classic.

Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice - Skating, by At Talaq) scored his first Group 1 win as a sire in controversial fashion when Luckygray (Bradbury’s Luck - Damah Lady, by Mukaddamah) won the Railway Stakes on protest on November 19. Luckygray will have a chance to show his Railway Strakes win was no fluke.

Below is the final field for Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot. Perth Racing will conduct the barrier draw for the weight-for-age race on Wednesday.

Luckygray wins Railway on protest

Luckygray (4 g Bradbury’s Luck - Damah Lady, by Mukaddamah) will be shown as the winner Saturday’s Gr 1 $1 million Carlton Draught Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot, finishing second past the post but being awarded the race in the stewards room at the end of  a controversial protest.

New Zealand-visitor He’s Remarkable (Pentire) was first past the post but Luckygray’s rider Shaun O’Donnell fired in a protest alleging interference at the 400-metre mark.

The interference came shortly before the turn for home where McEvoy eased He’s Remarkable away from the inside. The squezze came when Marco Chui attempted to keep Big Ted in the three-wide line and in the interference that followed Waratah’s Secret nearly  fell with race favourite Ranger severely hampered and Luckygray stopped in his forward move.

Luckygray ran on strongly but failed by a long neck to catch He’s Remarkable with Westriver Kevydon (Danetime) three and three-quarter lengths away in third.

Stewards questioned Chui about his tactics before holding McEvoy solely responsible for the scrimmage and reversed the finishing positions.

“It was unfortunate the incident happened,” O’Donnell said. ”My thoughts were that we should have won and I was a shattered man coming back in. I didn’t know who did it (the interference) and I told the trainer Gino Poletti we should look at the film.”

“I’m happy. I’ve won a Group One before but this is my first win in a million dollar race.”

Poletti purchased Luckygray for $48,000 as a yearling at the 2009 Magic Millions Perth Sale and he is the first Gr 1 winner for his sire, who stands at Glenlogan Park Stud in Queensland.

Great Group 1 chances for Testa Rossa in Perth

Consistent Vinery Stud stallion Testa Rossa (Perugino - Bo Dapper, by Sir Dapper) will have two great chances to add to his two Group 1 winners at Saturday’s Ascot meeting.

Ascot will host Perth’s flagship race day on Saturday with the newly-promoted Winterbottom Stakes to join the time-honoured Railway Stakes on a Group 1 double bill.

Testa Rossa’s Group 2-winning daughter Ortensia (Testa Rossa - Aerate’s Pick, by Picknicker) will attempt to score a belated Group 1 win in the Winterbottom Stakes after 12 attempts at the highest level.

Ortensia was first past the post in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick in 2010 before losing the race weeks later after stewards disqualified her after the mare provided a positive urine sample.

Now with Scone trainer Paul Messara, Ortensia scored an impressive first-up win in the Listed G H Munn Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on November 3.

The Bob Peters-owned Ranger (Testa Rossa - Marrich Bay, by Old Spice) is among the favourite for the day’s other Group 1 feature, the Railway Stakes (1600m).

Ranger won the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) last time out. The Grant Williams-trained five-year-old only needs luck drawing a barrier to be a genuine winning chance.

Both races carry $1 million in prizemoney with the barrier draws to be conducted on Tuesday at 5pm Perth time.
