The other Group One highlight on Oaks Day at Epsom Downs, Friday, June 5, is the £242,750 Coronation Cup, also run over a mile and a half.
A high-class contest is in prospect with a dozen of the finest older horses going forward at the second acceptance stage including Ask, who made an impressive seasonal reappearance in the Group Two Yorkshire Cup at York on May 15. His trainer Sir Michael Stoute could also be represented by Doctor Fremantle, fourth in last year’s Derby and successful on his return to action in the Group Three Huxley Stakes at Chester on May 7. The duo will be aiming to add to the impressive Coronation Cup record of Sir Michael Stoute, who has saddled the winner on four occasions.
The one late entry is Duncan, added to the Group One contest, is out of the yard of John Gosden and owned by the Normandie Stud, the four-year-old landed the Blue Square City & Suburban Handicap over 10 furlongs at Epsom Downs on April 22 before being the impressive winner of a Listed contest over 12 furlongs at Ascot on May 9.
Aidan O’Brien has dominated the Coronation Cup in recent seasons having landed the Epsom Downs contest in 2005, 2007 and 2008. The master of Ballydoyle’s remaining contender this year is the 2008 Irish Derby victor Frozen Fire, who finished third on his seasonal reappearance behind Buccellati in the Group Three Ormonde Stakes at Chester on May 8. The other remaining entry trained in Ireland is Casual Conquest, third in last year’s Derby and the impressive winner of the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh on May 24.
Last year’s Oaks heroine Look Here is set to return to the scene of her greatest triumph for her seasonal reappearance. The last Oaks winner to go on to Coronation Cup glory was Time Charter, who was successful as a five-year-old in the 1984 Coronation Cup, while the latest filly to complete the double in back-to-back years was Lupe in 1970-1971.
Youmzain was the three-quarters-of-a-length behind Soldier Of Fortune 12 months ago and the dual Arc de Triomphe runner-up is set to bid to go one better for trainer Mick Channon.
On his seasonal reappearance, Youmzain finished fourth in the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic at Nad Al Sheba behind Eastern Anthem, the remaining Coronation Cup entry from Godolphin.
Scintillo, trained by Richard Hannon, completes the confirmations.
