Encosta de Lago, the sire of 69 stakes winners, has started the new season off the same way he concluded last, turning out winners and on Saturday, he posted a metropolitan double with We Betcha and Little Surfer Girl at Rosehill.
We Betcha (ex Wager by Flying Spur) won the Fairfield RSL Handicap over 1400 metres and Little Surfer Girl (ex Special Harmony by Marooned) won the Club Liverpool Handicap over 1300 metres, and in doing so they gave the son of Fairy King and Shoal Creek 11 individual winners for the new season.

Both carried the all cerise colours of Ingham Racing with former New Zealander, Chris Waller, training both mares for Mr. Bob Ingham.

Purchased at the 2008 Australian Easter yearling sale, We Betcha a $600,000 yearling purchase, has since chalked up four wins and returned more than $240,000, while, Little Surfer Girl has taken her  earnings past $160,000 with her third career win.

A stakes winner last preparation, Little Surfer Girl, is the first foal and stakes winner for the former champion Special Harmony (by Marooned).

She was selected out of the Coolmore, as agent, draft at the 2008 Australian Easter yearling sale and cost $1.5million.

Fans of the stock of Encosta de Lago should note that BC3 selected a colt out of Timely Moment (by Peintre Celebre) out of this year’s Magic Millions sale from the draft of Reavill Farm.

BC3 parted with $200,000 for him and the American based company have since broken him in, and, like many of the youngsters that paraded on the preview day.  He revealed a nice temperament, coping with agents, veterinarians’ and trainers prodding, patting, picking up his front legs and walking in and out of his box many times.

The colt is part of a draft of 35 juveniles to go under the hammer at the BC3 Future Stars Sale at the Inglis, Oaklands Junction complex on Sunday, commencing at 1pm

Racing in Victoria on Thursday was held at Geelong, on the synthetic course, and well bred four-year-old Niblick looks a likely type for the future when he demoralised his rivals.

Sent out the favourite in his first run since running second at his only start in September last year, Niblick led throughout for the easiest of wins.

His margin at the home turn of a length was soon extended when he was asked to accelerate.

At the post Niblick held a massive seven length magin over a wall of horses headed by Alpha Tango Sierra. The runner-up was relegated to fourth after a subsequent protest heading.

Winning rider Nicholas Hall couldn’t help but be impressed with the effort of the Robert Hickmott trained Encosta de Lago gelding.

“He’s got good natural speed, so I used that to my advantage,” Hall told TVN after the race.

“He showed a good turn of foot,” he added.

Niblick a $220,000 purchase by Nick Williams from the draft of Swettenham Stud at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.  Raced by Williams in company with his parents Lloyd and Suzy.

The gelding is a half brother to the Group Two Sandown Guineas winner Moon Dragon - a winner of five races and earner of over $330,000.   Niblick’s dam Leica Vista, a daughter of Sir Tristram, won four races and earned black type when third in a listed Matron Stakes.

Leica Vista is a half sister to the Group One winner Leica Smile and stakes winning juvenile Dansino, the dam of Zagreb.

It is also the family of Group One winners Redding, Light Fantastic, Leica Guv , Leica Show and Pharaoh.

It now seems inevitable that Arrowfield’s Redoute’s Choice will take the 2009-10 Australian General Sires Title from the incumbent, Coolmore’s Encosta de Lago. The Brisbane winter carnival heroics of Melito and Dariana have turned a seemingly insurmountable deficit into a winning advantage for Danehill’s son.

Dariana (pic Sportpix)

Melito has always promised great things, delivering big time with her consistency and durability late in the season, her seven starts this preparation never failing to secure a substantial cheque, including a pair of Group Ones and over a million dollars in prizemoney.

Dariana was unraced at the start of 2010 but in the best traditions of her trainer Bart Cummings, rose from maiden status to Group One winner in very short order. Without Dariana’s Queensland Derby victory, Melito may still have done enough to secure the title for her sire, but in the final analysis Dariana’s career total is what will make the difference.

Interestingly, the pair are bred on two of the best crosses with RC, the Redoute’s Choice/Sir Tristram cross that resulted in Melito has 15 SWs from 69 runners, while the Redoute’s Choice/Last Tycoon cross that resulted in Dariana has 6 SWs from 21 runners, two powerful nicks by any standard.

At season’s end Australia’s two pre-eminent stallions will have each have two Champion Sire titles to boast of, with many runners out of some the best mares they each served still to hit the racetrack in the next few seasons. It will be interesting to see which of the champs can get his hat trick first. They will face serious competition in the coming years from the chasing pack which includes some very talented young stallions, but considering that when service fees peaked in 2007 and 2008, many commercial breeders sent their best mares to either one or the other, a third title is well on the cards for either, or possibly both these outstanding sires.

We will keep CHAMPION SIRE WATCH on the home page so that you can follow the contest to its conclusion, but it seems that EDL has run out of races, run out of racedays, or in the words of Edgar Allan Poe, “Out of SPACE- out of TIME”.

Sacred Kingdom, a three-time Group One winner this season was crowned Hong Kong Horse of the Year as well as  Champion Sprinter at the Jockey Club Awards presentation ceremony during the final Sha Tin race meeting of the 2009/2010 season.

He was also again voted Most Popular Horse of the Year.

Douglas Whyte was voted Most Popular Jockey of the Year for the fifth time.

Sacred Kingdom earned the title of Champion Sprinter for the third year in succession. During the 2009/2010 season, the Ricky Yiu-trained sprinter won the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sprint, then the HKG1 Kent & Curwen Centenary Sprint Cup and the HKG1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize.

Able One was named Champion Miler.    Trained by John Moore, Able One has had his career blighted by a series of stress fractures which prevented him from reaching his true potential after his upset win in the 2007 Champions Mile, and it was only this season that he made a full recovery. It was in the HKG2 Chairman’s Trophy that he first showed he was back to something like his very best, and he then followed up in the G1 Champions Mile, which was won in exactly the same fashion as that race with a dash of speed early in the straight that no rival was able to pull back.

Collection was honoured as the Champion Middle-Distance Horse.  John Moore’s Derby hero last year landed two magnificent victories this season over his favourite Sha Tin 2000m distance: the HKG2 Cathay Pacific International Cup Trial and the HKG1 Citibank Hong Kong Gold Cup. He also split French Derby winner Vision d’Etat and 2009 APQEII Cup winner Presvis in the G1 Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup. These performances were the true indicators of his talent.

Mr Medici won the title of Champion Stayer. After a season marked by consistent improvement over a variety of distances the Peter Ho trained five-year-old produced his crowning achievement when taking the HKG1 Standard Chartered Champions and Chater Cup in particularly testing conditions at Sha Tin on 30 May.

Entrapment was declared Champion Griffin. After six consecutive victories from his debut in February, the John Size trained three-year-old gelding ran out a very easy winner of his final outing in the Juvenile Sprint Trophy, a success which meant he had broken the Hong Kong record for most wins in a single season, an achievement which effectively ended argument about his superiority over an exceptional group of rivals.

John Size captured his sixth Champion Trainer’s title with 74 winners. Among his most prolific horses were the then record-equalling Brave Kid with six victories and the record-breaking Entrapment.

The Champion Jockey and Champion Apprentice Jockey titles, as well as the Most Improved Horse and winner of the 2008 Hong Kong International Sale Bonus of HK$1 million, remain to be decided and will be announced at the final race meeting at Happy Valley on Wednesday evening.

Australia’s leading sire, Encosta de Lago zoomed to the top of the sires table at the National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast with three of his youngsters topping the second session on Monday.

Patinack Farm bought the top lot of the sale - a colt from the Group One winning mare Ellicorsam - for $320,000.

Offered for sale by Willow Park Stud, the Encosta de Lago colt was one of the most admired lots of the auction and Patinack’s Rick Connolly was able to outbid local agent Grant Morgan.

“He’s a really nice colt,” Connolly said. “He’s got plenty of scope and we thought he was the top colt of the sale.”

“He’s from a Group One winner and could become a top sire prospect.”

“Overall he was a great mover and looked a top prospect and we’re delighted to be able to have bought him,” he summed up.

Earlier in the day Morgan tried to buy a filly by Coolmore’s son of Fairy King  from Golden Slipper winner Calaway Gal - again he missed out being the underbidder - this time to New Zealand’s David Ellis.

The Newgate Farm offering sold for $280,000.

“In life if you want to make a business out of buying horses the real goal is to buy a colt or filly by a champion sire or out of a champion mare that looks a real athlete,” Ellis told Greg Irvine.

“With this horse you get all three. She’s by the champion sire of the country and from a Golden Slipper winner.”

The filly will be sent across the Tasman and she will join the powerful Te Akau stable fronted by record breaking trainer Mark Walker.

Ellis said the National Sale had been a happy hunting ground for him over recent years.

“I’ve purchased two Group One winners from this sale in recent years - Princess Coup and Tell a Tale. We’ve also bought a couple of other handy ones.”

“It’s been a great sale for us and we enjoying coming over each year.”

Leading South African based bloodstock agent Andy Williams, buying under his World Wide Bloodstock outfit was busy again - taking his two day spend to over $1.34 million.

His feature purchase today was the half sister by Rock of Gibraltar to Group One winner Arlingtonboulevard for $100,000.

The strong selling and a record number of international purchases helped push the two day sale gross to over $10.4 million - up a staggering 89 per cent on last year’s figures.

The average price of $36,148 soared 63 per cent on the corresponding sale twelve months earlier.

And the clearance rate of 73 per cent yesterday, climbed to finish at 79 per cent for the entire sale with an over 80 per cent clearance today alone.

The top price of $400,000 wasn’t matched however Magic Millions Director David Chester was a happy man telling Irvine, “What an amazing two day’s selling,”

”The figures achieved have exceeded my expectations - although they didn’t surprise me completely.”

“Our team spent so a lot of time trying to ensure we had a large number of clients across all levels of the market.”

“And when you cast your eyes over the results you’ll see what a broad cross section of buyers we have from right around the world.”

It’s something I’m quite proud of - Magic Millions being a true international thoroughbred sales company.”

“Andy Williams (World Wide Bloodstock) from South Africa and Willie Leung (Magus Equine Ltd) from Hong Kong were exceptionally active and they secured some lovely youngsters.”

We also had a number of well known Australia trainers amongst the buyers as well - it was great to see so many of our loyal clients at the sale picking up their next racetrack star,” Chester added.
