MIKE and Kate Fleming’s Broadwater Thoroughbreds, in the heart of the Hunter Valley’s thoroughbred breeding country, will present a quality, 16-strong draft at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Although this is only the fourth draft taken to the Easter auction under the Broadwater Thoroughbreds banner, the stud’s record is an enviable one.

Previous graduates include Furious Stakes-Gr.2 winner Bound For Earth (Northern Meteor) and this season’s exciting Redoute’s Choice colt Scissor Kick, a winner of the Up And Coming Stakes-Gr.3 and the Eskimo Prince Stakes-Gr.3, having also finished a narrow runner-up in the Golden Rose Stakes-Gr.1 behind Hallowed Crown. Three members of Broadwater’s 2014 Easter draft have graced the track, producing two exciting juveniles in the form of the impressive Moonee Valley debut winner Heatherly (Lonhro) and the stakes performed Exceed and Excel colt Top Me Up from the Team Hawkes establishment.

At Easter 2015, the reigning Champion Sire Redoute’s Choice has more than 30 lots catalogued and Broadwater Thoroughbreds has consigned two outstanding yearlings who will clearly appeal to buyers. The second of the draft to enter the ring, Lot 82 is a bay colt by Redoute’s Choice from Listed placed Nureyev’s Girl. A brother to the New Zealand 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner King’s Rose, this colt’s pedigree also includes the dual Gr.1-winning Champion Two Year-Old Anabandana.

“Born and raised at Broadwater, the colt is a lovely medium sized Redoute’s Choice, who is very athletic as well as being a great mover,” Mike Fleming said. “With Redoute’s Choice now proving to be a sire of sires, this colt not only has the looks, but the impressive pedigree page to continue that legacy.”

The other Redoute’s Choice in the draft is a filly out of the Royal Academy mare Regally Blonde (Lot 131). This filly’s dam is a half-sister to exciting first season sire, and Champion Sprinter Starspangledbanner and also to the dam of this season’s MRC 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 winner Amicus. Mike is very keen on this yearling, highlighting her as one of the standout fillies of the draft. “She’s a lovely strong, medium sized filly with great attitude.

“She looks like a forward two year-old type and with Starspangledbanner in the pedigree getting off to a great start at stud, we are really confident breeders looking for a quality filly with a strong pedigree page will fall in love.” This yearling is bred on a pedigree cross that has resulted in seven individual winners from eight runners to the track and five are stakes performers.

One yearling who has always commanded plenty of attention in the draft and rightfully so, is Lot 297, one of two High Chaparral colts offered by Broadwater. The final foal from the now-deceased Quest For Fame mare Back Pass (USA), this colt is a half-brother to the stakeswinning Redoute’s Choice brothers Sharkbite and Scissor Kick. The colt comes from the outstanding European family of Hasili, a US Broodmare of the Year and the dam of five individual Gr.1 winners, while her champion sire son, the Gr.2 winner Dansili is probably her most well known offspring having produced 18 Gr.1 winners, highlighted locally by the Chris Waller-trained Forteller.

One of the leading three year-olds of this season, Scissor Kick is already a dual Gr.3 winner with a narrow Gr.1 placing to his record, and with trainer Paul Messara effusive in his praise for the colt, all at Broadwater Thoroughbreds are confident it won’t be too long until he has that Gr.1 victory alongside his name.

Fleming says this yearling is the, “right type” of High Chaparral. “He is a medium bodied colt, very well put together and in the same mould of Dundeel. He is a very athletic looking colt, a great mover just like his brother Scissor Kick.” Mike regards Broadwater’s 2013 Easter graduate Scissor Kick as one of the best moving yearlings he has ever taken to a sale, so to state this colt is as good a mover as his half-brother is high praise indeed.

With a draft that offers a mix of proven stallions such as Redoute’s Choice, High Chaparral, Exceed and Excel and Lonhro, first season sires, Todman Stakes-Gr.2 winner Smart Missile (Lot 267) and classic winner Cape Blanco (Lot 327), are also both represented. Fleming is confident the market will appreciate these two lots with both sires proving popular at the yearling sales already this year.

“First season sires have sold extremely well this year and we all know that only the best goes to Easter, so there is no reason why this won’t continue. The Cape Blanco filly (Lot 327) from stakes winner Causeway Queen (Giant’s Causeway) has a great attitude and mind set, she is a really impressive filly who has great balance and is very well put together.”

While the Smart Missile filly (Lot 267) is the second foal of the multiple stakeswinning Starcraft mare Ain’tnofallenstar, a pedigree continually on the move through the deeds of All American colt Bachman, as well as Singapore’s Champion three year-old Stepitup, both from this filly’s stakeswinning and Gr.1 placed second dam Ain’t Seen Nothin’.

With the draft also including a Lonhro half-sister to Gr.3 winner Zapurple (Lot 121), from stakes winner Purple Groove (Rhythm); a Sebring filly out of a half-sister to Champion Two Year-Old Colt Zizou (Lot 231), from Thirty Rock (Rock of Gibraltar); as well as a Medaglia d’Oro half-sister to the exciting Gr.3-winning colt Kermadec (Lot 442), from Hi Fuji (Fuji Kiseki), Fleming is adamant in his lofty appraisal of the draft. “It is definitely the best group of horses we have ever taken to any yearling sales, and we are extremely proud of what we have produced and look forward to seeing what the buyers think.”
