FIRST crop sons and daughters of William Reid Stakes-Gr.1 winner Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock) are highlights of Newgate Farm’s Easter draft and Henry Field is looking forward to showing them off. “He is truly stamping his stock and they have wonderful minds to match,” he said.

The first of Newgate’s Easter yearlings by Foxwedge is Lot 140, a colt out of Rose of Cimmaron (Bite The Bullet). This youngster is a three-quarter brother to the talented Bull Point and his dual city-winning dam is one of 11 winners for Gainesville (CAN) (Afleet), second dam of dual Gr.1 winner Criterion. “He is an outstanding colt. He is all athlete,” Field said.

Just two lots later in the Aberdeen farm’s draft is a Foxwedge colt from brilliant Testa Rossa daughter Rostova. Carrying three Danzig strains, Lot 142 is out of a mare who won the Robert Sangster Stakes-Gr.1, the VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.2 and a Blue Diamond Preview-Gr.3. “He is built very much in the mould of his dam, he has her strength and power and he looks a nice two year-old type with the scope to train on at three.”

Next up is Lot 224, a Foxwedge filly from Gr.2 winner Te Akau Rose (Thorn Park). Bred on a 5mx5m Storm Bird cross, she hails from the family of stakes winners Straussbridge, Testarhythm, Cavalry Rose, Sir Alberton, Alberton Star, Lady Alberton and Alberton Park. “She is a late foal who has really developed during the past few months. She is all quality, a beautiful queen of a filly with a physique to match her pedigree.”

Out of a winning half-sister to Tie The Knot, Lot 232 is a filly whose dam, the Street Cry mare This Way, is out of the 1000 Guineas-Gr.1 heroine Whisked. Bred on a 5mx4m cross of Nijinsky II, she is also line-bred to the excellent mares Natalma, Almahmoud and Flower Bowl. Her dam has already produced multiple winner Vision in Motion (Danewin). “She is a very correct, straightforward horse who I expect to impress trainers.”

The first foal of a winning half-sister to stakes winners Spacecraft and Phenomenons, Lot 320 is a brown colt from the Hotel Grand mare Call Me Paris. This is the family of Golden Slipper winner Tierce, his dam is bred on the same Danzig/Sir Tristram/Damascus cross as Foxwedge. “He is an absolute cracker, a class act and very much like his sire.”

Lot 350 is a bay Foxwedge colt out of imported stakes winner Dakota Sue (USA) (Pollard’s Vision), daughter of triple Listed winner Fancy Prancer who is also dam of stakes winners Robo Willie and Littlemiss Allison. A descendant of the influential Plucky Liege, he boasts three strains of Nijinsky II. “He is a late October foal who has developed well. His three-quarter-brother topped the Breeze Up last year and looks to have a ton of ability.”

The last of the Foxwedge yearlings from Newgate is Lot 558, a bay colt out of the Volksraad mare Katana. A Champion Two Year-Old Filly in NZ, Katana has produced the US Gr.2 winner Broken Sword (Broken Vow). Carrying duplications of Danzig, Sir Tristram and Secretariat, and of the latter’s dam Somethingroyal, Henry said “He has really done well in the past few months.”

The remainder of Newgate’s draft is also strong with three Street Cry yearlings a highlight, especially so after the win by his juvenile son Pride of Dubai in the 2015 Blue Diamond-Gr.1. The first by the now deceased champion sire is Lot 4, a filly out of Emancipation Stakes-Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 placed Kosi Bay (Spinning World) from the family of NZ Gr.1 winner Calveen, recent Gr.3 winner Fireworks and Listed winner Striker. “She is a very stylish filly with great quality. She is a nicely balanced good mover from an exceptionally deep family.”

Lot 36 is a Street Cry colt, the first foal for the multiple Group winner Majestic Music (Al Maher). Bred on a 4fx5m cross of Halo and from the family of Gr.1 winners Serious Speed and March Hare, “he has a lot of his dam’s strength about him and he is a horse who should mature relatively quickly. He ticks a lot of boxes.”

The third of Newgate’s Street Cry youngsters is Lot 278, a son of the imported stakes winner Amazing Tale (USA) (Tale of the Cat). A grandson of Gr.3 winner Svea Dahl and a descendant of the great La Troienne, this yearling is bred on a 3mx4f cross of Mr. Prospector. “This fellow is more of a three year-old type, he is a correct workmanlike colt with good size and scope,” Henry said.

The first of two So You Think colts in the exceptionally deep draft is is Lot 311 out of the dual Listed winning Lonhro mare Black Minx, a talented juvenile in Brisbane. Line-bred to Special, this colt is a grandson of the Emancipation Stakes- Gr.2 winner Faith Hill (Danehill) and next dam is Gr.3 winner Simply Believe (Kenmare). “He is a quality horse out of a fast mare and he looks an early maturing type of So You Think. He will definitely have his admirers.”

Out of the multiple winner and Gr.3 placed Danehill mare Danevade, Lot 354 is a bay So You Think colt from the immediate family of Hong Kong Gr.1 winner Scintillation and four times Group winner Shania Dane. Line-bred to the fine mares Natalma, Almahmoud and Lalun. “He is a big, strong, powerful colt with a great blend of So You Think and Danehill. Very impressive.”

His dam is an imported stakes placed half-sister to the dual Listed winner Tale of a Dream and from a strong US family whose immediate members include dual Gr.1 winner Elloluv (Gilded Time). “He is a three year-old type with a lot of elegance for a High Chaparral. He should develop into a very nice classic type.”

Earlier in the sale Newgate sells Denman filly, Lot 14 out of Lady of Love (Lago Delight). A half-sister to ATC Sires’ Produce-Gr.1 winner Peggy Jean, this yearling hails from the family of Lady Jakeo. Carrying crosses of the excellent mares Special and Lalun, Henry describes her as, “a very good representative of Denman, a very athletic filly.” Lot 139 is a Snitzel filly from Rosa Stellata (Zabeel), daughter of Coolmore Classic-Gr.1 winner Camino Rose (Sea Road). Carrying crosses of excellent mares Natalma and Flower Bowl, she is considered a stand out by Field. “She has an awesome physique and is a very strong, correct, precocious filly bred on a popular cross.”

Lot 192, a filly by multiple Gr.1 winner and champion sire Lonhro is a sister-in-blood to champion two and three year-old Pierro and out of Snow Spell (GB) (Daylami), an imported half-sister to dual Gr.1 winner Laverock (by Lonhro’s sire Octagonal). Boasting crosses of Lalun and Special, Henry says she is “very much in the Pierro mould. She is a lovely walking filly with a great temperament, good size and scope and she is sure to prove popular.”

Colts by champion Fastnet Rock are always in demand and Lot 281 should prove no exception, the bay being the first foal of dual Gr.1 winner Anabandana (Anabaa), Champion Two Year-Old in NZ. “He is a big, strong powerful colt with a huge pedigree. he will prove to be popular.” Another yearling by a leading stallion is Lot 409, a bay daughter of Redoute’s Choice and the Gr.1 runner-up Fleur De’here (Dehere). This filly’s dam is a winner and Gr.1 placed daughter of Gr.2 mare Fleur de Chine, dam of Australasian Oaks-Gr.1 winner Tully Thunder. Hailing from the family of recent stakes winners Thunder Lady and Tie Me Down, she is another highly regarded. “A filly with superb balance and athleticism.”

This bay colt is out of Around The Clock (Galileo), hails from the prolific “Leica” family and his pedigree features the three-quarter brothers Nureyev and Sadler’s Wells. “He is a horse of great strength and quality, I am very impressed by him,” Henry said.
