Newhaven Park

A Derby winner in South Africa, a Group One sprinter in Singapore, a Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, a champion two-year-old in Western Australia and a string of top class winners in Sydney, Melbourne, Queensland and South Australia.

And they are just a few of the recent highlights provided by racehorses bred at Newhaven Park.

Champions have been bred at Newhaven for over half a century, their names appearing on an honour roll that boasts four Golden Slipper winners, six AJC Sires Produce Stakes winners, eight Champagne Stakes winners and such outstanding horses as Wenona Girl, Burst, Prowl, Shogun Lodge, Grand Armee, Al Samer, Magic Albert, Research, Encounter, Absolute Champion and Zac Spirit.

And there are plenty more on the track now, and plenty more to come.

As the Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling sale approaches, Newhaven is in form, as can be seen by the recent performances in 2YO filly English and 3YO fillies Supara, Peeping and Festivity.

Newhaven-bred horses won 18 races in the first two months of 2015 and 63 in the first seven months of the current season, and the farm will offer yearlings related to many of them at Easter.

“The Easter sale is a barometer for our industry, and I think the racing industry in Australia is the healthiest that it has been in my lifetime,” said Newhaven Park’s John Kelly.

“The Championships, the prize money increases in NSW from the back of the wagering tax upgrade and the successes of our horses internationally are all factors that lend a very bright outlook.

“I expect this will filter through to Easter. We have certainly seen that at other sales so far this year.”

Among the Newhaven Easter Sale draft of 20 is a colt out of a half-sister to Group One South African Derby winner Wylie Hall (Redoute’s Choice) and to his half-brother, the Hong Kong Group One performer Absolute Champion.

There’s also a half-sister by Commands to the 2014 Magic Millions Classic winner Unencumbered, a brother to Group Three winner We’re Gonna Rock, a stunning filly by freshman sire Smart Missile, a colt by Snitzel from the family of multiple Group One winner Grand Armee and a filly by the English Group One 2000 Guineas winner Makfi.

“We have grown them to deliver on the racetrack,” John Kelly said. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but in my opinion the stand out colt is Lot 432, by Fastnet Rock, He is a lovely athletic horse, very typical of his sire.”

This colt is a brother to VRC Bobbie Lewis Handicap-Gr.3 and SAJC R.N. Irwin Stakes-Gr.3 winner We’re Gonna Rock and is out of Harrow, a winning mare who, in turn has left three winners. Harrow is a half-sister to NZ International Stakes-Gr.1 winner Bluebird the Word (Bluebird) and Coolmore Classic-Gr.1 winner Porto Roca (Barathea), the dam of Dubai World Cup-Gr.1 winner Monterosso (Dubawi).

Another colt Kelly expects to attract interest is Lot 504, by Snitzel from Appear (Danzero), a winning mare who has left three winners. The colt is from the prolific family of four-time Group One winner Grand Armee (Hennessy) and the Group One winners Drum (Marauding), Anamato (Redoute’s Choice) and Dealer Principal (Flying Spur).

He also has a high opinion of Lot 399, a Redoute’s Choice colt and the first foal from stakes placed Fashion (Encosta De Lago). This colt’s second dam is the Blue Diamond Stakes-Gr.1 winner True Jewels (Brief Truce). Other quality members of the family include Group Two winner and multiple Group One placegetter Wager (Flying Spur).

Kelly’s number one filly is Lot 238, by freshman sire Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock) from Unabated (Encosta De Lago). This yearling’s dam is a stakes placed winner of four races and has left three winners, including stakes placed Win For Layla (Flying Spur) and Supara (Domesday), who was second behind First Seal in the Surround Stakes-Gr.2 on February 28. The family includes Edward Manifold Stakes-Gr.2 winner Tynia, Group Three winner and Group One runner-up Permaiscuous (Danzero), Group Three winner and sire Adventurous (Fairy King) and Listed winner Diamond To Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus).

Lot 236 is a bay filly by exciting first season sire Sepoy from the winning Red Ransom mare Two Beauties who is a half-sister to Wylie Hall and Absolute Champion, also the winner at two of the STC Pago Pago Stakes-Gr.2 in Australia under his original name of Genius and Evil.

The same family is represented by Lot 543, a filly by first season sire Pluck from the Zeditave mare Family Girl, one of seven winners, along with Wylie Hall and Absolute Champion, from Beauty Belle. The family also includes the Group One winners Drum, Anamato, Grand Armee and Dealer Principal.

Newhaven sold exciting Singapore Lion City Cup-Gr.1 winner Zac Spirit (Flying Spur) at the 2011 Easter Sale and the farm has also recently sold Group winners such as Charlie Boy (Myboycharlie), Wylie Hall (Redoute's Choice), Camporella (Exceed and Excel) and of course Magic Millions Two Year-Old Classic-RL winner and now young sire Unencumbered (Testa Rossa) whose half-sister by Commands and from Keith Mackay Handicap-LR winner Blizzardly (More Than Ready) is Lot 313.

The filly is by Commands from Blizzardly, a stakes winner at two and a winner at three whose only three foals have all been winners. Her third dam is stakes winner and Group placed Sober Dancer and second dam Concise is a juvenile winner by Golden Slipper winner by Marscay and there are multiple winners under every dam on the catalogue page.

Another stand-out filly from the Newhaven draft is Lot 359, by promising young sire Makfi (Dubawi), winner of the English 2000 Guineas-Gr.1 whose first crop in Europe included 20 two year-old winners in 2014, including French stakes winner Cornwallville.

His southern hemisphere runners have also made a strong start. They include ARC Eclipse Stakes-Gr.3 winner Marky Mark (ex My My Maree by Testa Rossa) in NZ. The filly being offered is a half-sister to Champion NZ Two Year-Old Ruud Awakening (Bernardini) and 15-race winner Lucasam (Dehere).

Others expected to command attention include Lot 56, a colt by Redoute’s Choice from Miss Marielle (Encosta de Lago), whose dam is a Group Two winner; Lot 125, a colt by Sepoy from Adrian Knox Stakes-Gr.3 winner Raise (Arena), whose dam is a sister to Group One winner Rena’s Lady and a half-sister to Group Two winner Vatuvei (Reset); Lot 233, a filly by Sepoy from winning Grand Lodge mare Tiffin; and, Lot 475, a filly by Manhattan Rain from Listed winning sprinter Sunriseontheoasis (USA) (Gilded Time), whose two foals to race are already winners.
