TURANGGA Farm’s star Easter graduate, Able Friend (Shamardal (USA)-Ponte Piccolo (NZ) by Volksraad (GB)) has truly flown the flag for the Scone nursery. Now the highest rated horse ever trained out of Hong Kong, Able Friend currently sits third on the overall international rankings with a rating of 127 behind only the Japanese duo of Just A Way and Epiphaneia.

Purchased by agent George Moore, son of trainer John Moore, for $550,000 at the 2011 Easter Yearling Sale, he has won his past three starts, including the Longines Hong Kong International Mile-Gr.1 last December and most recently The Stewards Cup-Gr.1 in January. The talented galloper has truly captured the imagination of Hong Kong racing fans and those further afield.

Able Friend’s exploits place him in exalted company, but Turangga Farm is no one-trick pony. Good horses abound on Turangga’s honour roll and include the likes of Gr.1 winners Mr Murphy, Headway and Sky Cuddle, the Magic Millions 2YO Classic-RL winner Karuta Queen, Gr.2 winners Believe Yourself, Elite Falls, Fast Clip, Highly Recommended, Keiki, Pitstop and Schilling, and the Gr.3 winners Laseron, Mecir, My Emotion, Our Quivira and Sky Love. Another worthy of mention is the Listed winner Fighting Sun whose career was cut short by injury and who is now at stud.

Resident stallion Zizou (Fusaichi Pegasus (USA)-Natural is My Name by Naturalism) is ticking over very nicely too. There always seems to be a youngster by Zizou in the winner’s circle and he had 76 winners (62.3% of starters) of more than $4m to late February. Pitstop, a winner of the Aushorse Golden Horseshoe-SGPGr.2 in Singapore, Everage, Marseille Roulette and Zin Zan Eddie spring to mind and this season Zoutenant took out the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic-RL.

Turangga’s Easter draft for 2015 is once again all about quality. First into the ring is Lot 78, a bay colt by More Than Ready (USA) from the Gr.3-winning Danehill mare Niagara Falls. This colt is a brother to Elite Falls (ATC Reisling Stakes-Gr.2, 3rd ATC Golden Slipper S-Gr.1) and is described by farm principal Stuart Ramsey as “a magnificent colt, with scope, great presence and length of rein. He has strength throughout.”

The next lot into the ring (Lot 92) is sure to command attention as he is a bay colt by champion sire Redoute’s Choice from the talented Spinning World mare Our Quivira whose six wins included the SAJC Dermody Stakes Gr.3. He is a half-brother to stakes winner Panipique and to stakes placed Tribal Rock. “He’s a well balanced colt in the mould of Redoute’s Choice’s most successful progeny. Think of Snitzel and Not a Single Doubt,” Stuart said. Lot 101, a High Chaparral filly, is a daughter of the Gold Coast Bracelet-LR winner Pentacity (by Pentire). “She’s a classic High Chaparral filly, carrying the very successful cross of influential broodmare Lalun.”

The Sebring colt (Lot 116) from Private (Encosta de Lago) is a brother to Gr.2 winner Believe Yourself and is described as “compact, well balanced and full of quality. A two year-old type.” Lot 167 is a bay filly by multiple champion NZ sire O’Reilly from the Sequalo mare Sequential Charm who won the Queensland Guineas Gr.2. This youngster is a sister to ATC Silver Shadow Stakes-Gr.2 third Clover Lane. Stuart says she is a “classic O’Reilly filly”. Next up is Lot 173, a colt by Golden Slipper winner Sebring from Shantha’s Girl (Redoute’s Choice), and this fellow who has lots of scope, is “from one of Turangga’s most successful families. His second dam is Gr.1 winner Sky Cuddle (Snippets) and he carries the successful 4mx3m cross of multiple champion sire Danehill.”

Another possessing with a great pedigree page and related closely to the previous offering, is Lot 189, a filly by Snitzel from Sky Cuddle’s Gr.3-winning half-sister Sky Love (Octagonal). Stuart said this filly, who carries a double of Biscay, is “a well balanced yearling with great muscle and bone.” Lot 258 is an O’Reilly colt from Ziya (IRE) (Lion Cavern). This yearling’s fourth dam is champion Peite Etoile and he descends from the flying Mumtaz Mahal. “This is an outstanding colt from one of the Aga Khan’s superior families.”

The chestnut colt, Lot 283, by first crop sire and Golden Slipper winner Sepoy, will have buyers sitting up and taking notice as his dam is the Salinger Stakes-Gr.1 winner Ancient Song (Canny Lad) who won nine races to 1300m and $780,000 and has already produced stakes winner Tampiko. “He oozes quality and is the mirror image of his sire. The Golden Slipper beckons as this is an outstanding colt.”

TThere is plenty of speed too in the pedigree of Lot 334 as this brown filly is a half-sister to a Gr.1 winner and Golden Slipper runner-up Headway and her fourth dam is champion filly Cendrillon. She is by Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 winner Onemorenomore and from the Flying Spur mare Chatelaine who won three races and was runner-up in the AJC Silver Shadow Stakes-Gr.2. “She is a beautiful filly and carries all the quality of her three-quarter sister Headway (VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes Gr.1 and Champion Two Year-Old Filly in Australia 2008-09) and is a precocious two year-old type.”

The Sebring colt, Lot 340, from Classic Quest (USA) (Coronado’s Quest) is a half-brother to stakes placed filly Quest For Peace and his second dam was a Graded winner in the US. He is a “colt with scope and built in the mould of Sebring Gr.1 winner Criterion. He has exceptional bone and possesses great character.”

A three-quarter sister to Mirjulisa Lass (ATC Vinery Stud Stakes Gr.1) is next into the ring. Lot 371 is by the all-conquering Fastnet Rock from Dol (Dolphin Street), a half-sister to Gr.2 winner Pembleton. “As her dam’s name suggests, she is a doll and is well balanced with class written all over her.” The quality continues with the next offering as Lot 387, a colt by Northern Meteor from stakes placed Eskaw (NZ) (Chief Bearheart), is from one of Turangga’s most treasured families, his dam being a half-sister to Our Quivira and Kishkat. “Beautiful walking, big and strong, he is a magnificent colt. He shows all the qualities of his sire’s most successful progeny such as the Turangga bred Fighting Sun.”

Lot 451 is a bay filly by Northern Meteor from the Ivory’s Irish mare Irish Darling, winner of the SAJC Australasian Oaks-Gr.1, and is a sister to the Canonbury Stakes-LR winner Fighting Sun. “Words can’t truly describe this filly. Very, very classy and as a sister to Fighting Sun she is a must-have filly.” A filly (Lot 491) by Golden Slipper winner and successful sire Stratum is next along and she is from the metropolitan-winning Bel Esprit mare Watchme. This yearling’s dam is a half-sister to the good Singapore gallopers Risky Business and Lim’s Fighter and second dam is Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 second Sky Watch (Star Watch). “A well balanced filly, she has a similar 4fx4f cross of Vain as champion Black Caviar. Will run.”

The penultimate offering is Lot 498, a colt by French Gr.1 winner and Gr.1 sire Myboycharlie (IRE) from the Zabeel mare Zakusa. He is a half-brother to the well-performed Koroibete and his dam is a three-quarter sister to Gr.1 winner Isolda. “A classy colt from a very successful staying family,” Stuart said. The final lot for Turangga is Lot 574, a brown filly by Manhattan Rain from the Rory’s Jester mare Midnight Rock who is a half-sister to Gr.1 winner Aloha. This yearling is a half-sister to My Emotion (MVRC Moonee Valley Fillies Classic-Gr.2) and her second, third and fourth dams are all stakes winners. “She is a mature, ready to race filly from one of the most successful families in the stud book. The Tennessee family.”

The final word goes to Stuart Ramsey. “I know we breed good, tough horses from this farm. We are located in the Segenhoe Valley and it is without doubt one of the best places to breed horses in this country. If you want to buy a winner, and even increase your chances of getting a top liner, then you should pay close attention to the draft from Turangga Farm.”
