Casino Prince Champion First Season Sire

Patinack Farm stallions Casino Prince (Flying Spur – Lady Capel, by Last Tycoon) and Husson (Hussonet – Villa Elisa, by Roy) have quinellaed the Australian First Season Sires’ Premiership.

Casino Prince comprehensively took out the title, thanks largely to the deeds of Black Caviar’s (Bel Esprit – Helsinge, by Desert Sun) half-brother All Too Hard (Casino Prince – Helsinge, by Desert Sun).

All Too Hard won Stakes races at his first three starts before the exciting colt finished second to star juvenile Pierro (Lonhro – Miss Right Note, by Daylami) in the Group 1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

Casino Prince sired 10 individual winners of 14 races while Husson produced 11 winners of 13 race, including two Stakes winners Hussousa (Husson – Petousa, by Redoute’s Choice) and Affable (Casino Prince – Lady Gracious, by Redoute’s Choice).

Husson will stand for $22,000 at Patinack Farm in the 2012 breeding season while Casino Prince will command a fee of $27,500 in the spring.

Hail the new champion Fastnet Rock

The result was known some weeks ago but Coolmore Stud has a new Australian champion stallion after the coronation of Fastnet Rock (Danehill – Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) at the end of the day’s racing.

Fastnet Rock went winless on the final day of the 2011/12 season but easily finished as the leading Australian General Sire after his progeny earned a record $12.6 million in the last 12 months.

Fastnet Rock’s three-year-old crop propelled the sire to the top of the ranks. Mosheen (Fastnet Rock – Sumehra, by Stravinsky) with four Group 1 wins led the charge for the stallion along with unbeaten star Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock – Regard, by Zabeel) and dual Group I winner Sea Siren (Fastnet Rock – Express A Smile, by Success Express).

Fastnet Rock became the third son of Coolmore legend Danehill (Danehill – Razyana, by His Majesty) to become the Australian Champion Stallion after Redoute’s Choice (Danehill – Shantha’s Choice, by Canny Lad) in 2006 and 2010 and Flying Spur (Danehill – Rolls, by Mr Prospector).

The 2010/11 champion stallion Lonhro (Octagonal – Shadea, by Straight Strike) finished more than $3 million behind Fastnet Rock despite the deeds of the wonderful juvenile Pierro (Lonhro – Miss Right Note, by Daylami), who won the Australian Triple Crown of the Group 1 Golden Slipper, JAC Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes.

Pierro’s proficiency during the autumn handed Lonhro the title of the leading two-year-old sire by earnings ahead of Arrowfield’s emerging force Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice – Snippets’ Lass, by Snippets), which leapt from 39th to ninth in the General Sires’ classification.

Redoute’s Choice finished third in the 2011/12 General Sires’ standings.

Fastnet Rock will stand for $220,000 (inc GST) at Coolmore during the 2012 Australian breeding season.

25th Stakes winner for Blevic

The Stakes winner tally for the late Kambula Stud stallion Blevic (Scenic – Blooms, by Biscay) moved to 25 when Avoid Lightning (Blevic – Ya Michelle, by Success Express) won Saturday’s Listed Lightning Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville.

Kambula Stud announced Blevic’s passing earlier this month but the stallion’s stock has continued to win races, as shown at Murray Bridge on Wednesday when five of the sire’s progeny won races.

Avoid Lightning followed the speed before surging clear of her opposition to score a comfortable 2-1/4 length win over Vatican (God’s Own – Our Sistine, by Peintre Celebre) and Le Societe (Anabaa – Ritzy Lady, by Zabeel).

Avoid Lightning is a three-year-old daughter of the unraced mare Ya Michelle (Success Express – La Belle Michelle, by Twig Moss). Ya Michelle is a half-sister to the Stakes-placed pair Ashley Kate (Brocco – Belle Michelle, by Twig Moss) and Michelle Cafea (Strategic – Belle Michelle, by Twig Moss).

The filly’s trainer David Jolly said he would continue the rising four-year-old’s preparation with an eye to Stakes races in Melbourne while Victoria’s tracks remain wet.

First Australian Stakes winner for Darley stalllion

Anabaa’s three-quarter brother Country Reel (Danzig – Country Belle, by Seattle Slew) earned his first Australian Stakes winner when Spinnawitch prevailed in the Listed Winter Challenge (1600m) at Warwick Farm.

Spinnawitch missed more than a year with various issues but the mare, who was Stakes placed as a three-year-old, has returned in devastating form with wins at both her starts for new trainer Jarrod Austin.

Austin took over the team of Denise McGrath when the latter decided to pursue other interests. However, McGrath was a proud owner when Spinnawitch streamed down the centre of the course to claim her maiden Stakes success.

Country Reel shuttled to Australia for two seasons – 2005 and 2006 – before Darley decided to base the Group 2-winning stallion at its European base.

Spinnawitch was Country Reel’s sixth Stakes winner overall.

Ready To Rip too good in Bletchingly

Talented More Than Ready (Southern Halo – Woodman’s Girl, by Woodman) gelding Ready To Rip (More Than Ready – Lady Langham, by Danehill) recorded his second Stakes win this month with his decisive success in Saturday’s Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Ready To Rip made an immediate impression with his fresh victory in the Listed All Victorian Sprint Series Sprint Final (1200m) before returning to his home track to win the $125,000 Bletchingly Stakes.

On-pace runners dominated the event. Ready To Rip followed the early leaders Dusty Star (General Nediym – Forever Midnight, by Snippets) and Zamorar (Scandal Keeper – Chloris, by Scenic) before overpowering the front-runners in the last 50 metres to win by a half-length.

Ready To Rip’s trainer Peter Moody, who also prepared last year’s Bletchingly Stakes winner Mid Summer Music (Oamaru Force – Samsara Lady, by Nassipour, said the stable recruit’s work in the lead-up to the event convinced him the four-year-old had made the necessary improvement to win at Caulfield.

“He’s lifted at weight-for-age. He was second-up, they had him pegged as a little bit of a first-up specialist so he has done a good job,” Moody said.

“He has enjoyed the three weeks (between runs). His gallop Tuesday suggested he had lifted and his performance today showed that.

“He enjoys the sting out of the ground as well. If it stays a little bit damp for August, we should find a nice little race for him there somewhere.”

Ready To Rip is one of 99 individual Stakes winners for the top Vinery Stud stallion More Than Ready. Ready To Rip’s dam Lady Langham (Danehill – Winning Hit, by Shining Finish) foaled a colt by Mossman (Success Express – Lady Lichen, by Twig Moss) in 2010 as well as a filly by Discorsi (Galileo – Express A Smile, by Success Express) in 2011 while the mare is expecting a foal sired by War Chant (Danzig – Hollywood Wildcat, by Kris S) later this year.

12th Stakes winner for Hard Spun

Hard Spun (Danzig – Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman) produced his second Stakes winner in a week at the Saratoga racecourse when Artest (Hard Spun – Desire To Excel, by Mt Livermore) strode to victory in the Listed Quick Call Stakes (5-1/2f).

Questing (Hard Spun – Chercheuse, by Seeking The Gold) and Zo Impressive (Hard Spun – Zoftig, by Cozzene) quinellaed the Grade 1 American Oaks last weekend.

Artest settled midfield under jockey John Velazquez before improving quickly rounding the tight home turn. The colt quickened impressively to become Hard Spun’s 12th individual Stakes winner in decisive fashion.

“Johnny [Velazquez] always seems to come through for us, and we have great communication as a partnership,” winning trainer Michelle Nihei told TDN.

“I always thought this horse wanted two turns. [Owner] Dennis [Narlinger] was the one who said, ‘Let’s go back [to sprints]’.

“He needs speed, something to run at. He’s the kind of horse that never runs out of air. He trains six, seven, eight furlongs.”

Vegas No Show (Hard Spun – The Hess Express, by Lord Carson) completed a double for Hard Spun when the two-year-old scored his first win at his second start at Delaware.

Big Brown’s brother bolts in at Leopardstown

The juvenile half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown (Boundary – Mien, by Nureyev) broke his maiden in wonderful fashion at Leopardstown in Ireland on Thursday.

Afonso De Sousa (Henrythenavigator – Mien, by Nureyev) suffered defeats at the Curragh and Newmarkt at his first two starts but demolished his opposition in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders’ Fund Maiden (6f).

The Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old jumped straight to the lead in the event before barely breaking a sweat while posting a nine-length win under jockey Joseph O’Brien.

“This better ground made all the difference, as his sire hated soft ground,” Aidan O’Brien told TDN. “He is a possible for the G1 Phoenix S. [at The Curragh Aug. 12].”

The $US330,000 Keeneland purchase was the sixth individual winner for Coolmore stallion Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo – Sequoyah, Sadler’s Wells), who stands his northern hemisphere seasons at the international operation’s Ashford Stud arm in the US.

Henrythenavigator will complete his 2012 southern hemisphere duties at Coolmore’s Jerry’s Plains property where he will command a $22,000 service fee.

2YO double for Holy Roman Emperor

Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill – L’On Vite, by Secretariat) did not make the Coolmore shuttle squad to Australia for the 2012 breeding season but the sire managed a midweek metropolitan double at Canterbury and Eagle Farm.

Queen’s Elect (Holy Roman Emperor – Grand Story, by Grand Lodge) broke through for an overdue win after a run of minor placings in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1580m) at Canterbury.

The $30,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast purchase led all the way to become the third winner from three foals to race for her dam Grand Story  (Grand Lodge – Explanation, by County). Queen’s Elect is a half-sister to Stakes winner My Destiny (Stratum – Explanation, by County) but Payne said his filly could win over longer distances than the 1580 metres of Wednesday’s race.

“She’s going to be alright this filly and maybe over a bit further as well, I think she could step up to 2000 metres,” Payne told TVN.

Lady Of Capri (Holy Roman Emperor – Playground Express, by Success Express) became the 13th two-year-old winner sired by Holy Roman Emperor when the Kelly Schweida-trained filly won the Tattersall’s Bowls Club Handicap (1000m).

Five for Blevic at Murray Bridge

Kambula Stud marvel Blevic (Scenic – Blooms, by Biscay) passed away earlier this month but the stallion’s progeny continues to chalk up with victories with five wins at Wednesday’s Murray Bridge meeting.

The stallion’s versatility was on show at Murray Bridge with Blevic’s five winners coming at distances between 1000 and 2200 metres.

The late Kambula Stud stallion Blevic was the sire of five winners at Murray Bridge in Wednesday

Uschrike (Blevic – Soliciteuse, by Zabaleta) started Blevic’s winning run with a comfortable success in the Visy Maiden Plate (1000m) before two-year-old filly Castano Girl (Blevic – Greimota, by Greig) defeated older rivals at her third start for the Kylie Huxtable stable.

Blevic Lad (Blevic – Laudation, by Barathea) got home for the Richard Jolly stable in the Ecowize Maiden Plate (1600m) before staying mare Quick ‘n’ Slick (Blevic – Caddy’s Star, by John’s Hero) won the Hughes Constructions Handicap (2200m).

Exalted Wonder (Blevic – Our Dear Lady, by Southern Appeal) completed Blevic’s outstanding day with her win in the Cryovac Handicap (1200m).

Blevic has sired 47 winners of 67 races from 147 runners this season.

Castano Girl was the stallion’s second juvenile winner in 2011/12.
