Artie Schiller mare takes Lord Stakes

Artie Schiller mare Secret Liaison earned her second stakes success when she outslugged her opposition in the Listed Lord Stakes (1612m) at Mornington.

Secret Liaison went more than 12 months without a win after her Listed Twilight Glow Stakes victory during her three-year-old season but has raced in great heart since returning to the winner’s list at Moonee Valley on November 24.

The four-year-old carried her good form to Caulfield before finishing second at Flemington to earn a shot at another stakes victory.

Co-trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra booked Group 1-winning rider Ben Melham to partner Secret Liaison at Mornington. Melham subsequently gave his mount a textbook ride to claim the $120,000 event.

Melham parked Secret Liaison just off the speed in fifth spot, about four lengths from the lead, where the mare travelled sweetly until the jockey asked her to improve from the 600 metres.

Secret Liaison worked into the race from the 600 metres before digging deep over the final furlong to score by a half-neck to post her third win from her past four starts.

“Just getting her confidence back at Moonee Valley helped her and confidence is a wonderful thing,” Zahra said. “She has held her condition really well.

“She normally gets back a bit but these last couple of runs, she has raced a bit closer and just towed into the race like she did again today.”

Secret Liaison is one of a multitude of stakes winners Ellerton Zahra Racing has prepared for long-time stable supporter, Contract Racing’s David Moodie.

“David is a breeder and that is what you have got to target when planning her preparations and Mathew should take a lot of the credit for finding the right race for her,” Zahra said.

The win was Secret Liaison’s fifth from 22 starts and the $72,000 winner’s cheque took her prizemoney tally to more than $338,000.

Darley filly out to emulate dam in 1000 Guineas

Darley-owned filly Zydeco (Zabeel – All Time High, by Flying Spur) has a chance to emulate her dam with a win in Wednesday’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

All Time High (Flying Spur – All Sold, by Northern Spring) won the race in 2000 while in the care of Flemington trainer Russell Cameron.

Cameron will saddle a runner of his own in this year’s Thousand Guineas, the dual stakes winner Lady Of Harrods (Dubawi – Royal Conspiracy, by Strategic) while Adelaide filly Molto Bene (Royal Academy – Benevolent, by Generous) will probably start favourite in the $500,000 event.

Brilliant filly Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet Rock – Regard, by Zabeel) led home a Fastnet Rock (Danehill – Piccadilly Circus, by Royal Academy) quinella when she defeated Mosheen (Fastnet Rock – Sumehra, by Stravinsky) easily last year. Atlantic Jewel’s three-quarter sister Commanding Jewel (Commands  – Regard, by Zabeel) will attempt to keep the Thousand Guineas trophy in the family.

Maiden of the day – D’Artagnan swashbuckling in Adelaide

Artie Schiller (El Prado – Hidden Light, by Majestic Light) three-year-old D’Artagnan (Artie Schiller – Satin Sheets, by Dehere) broke his maiden in terrific fashion when successful in Wednesday’s Irish Day 1/9 Maiden (1100m) at Morphettville.

The Emirates Park Stud resident enjoyed Stakes success when his daughter Lady Melksham (Artie Schiller – Oak Park Carashan, by Keltrice) won last Saturday’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

D’Artagnan showed he is capable of winning better races than the midweek Adelaide maiden. The gelding raced no closer than four horses off the inside fence but covering the extra ground failed to stop D’Artagnan striding away from his rivals in the straight to win by two lengths.

The talented prospect is a son of the Dehere mare Satin Sheets (Dehere, by Neensie, by Solitary Hail). The mare is a half-sister to the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) Solar Circle (Star Way – Neensie, by Solitary Hail).

Lady the 12th SW for Artie

Artie Schiller (El Prado – Hidden Light, by Majestic Light) mares Lady Melksham (Artie Schiller – Oak Park Carashan, by Keltrice) notched her first Stakes victory, and fourth win overall, with a game performance in Saturday’s Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Flemington trainer John Sadler produced Lady Melksham for the first time in a maiden at Sale on April 29. The mare subsequently underlined her potential with three straight wins before giving Riziz (Zariz – Priya, by Covetous) too much start in the Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m) at her only previous Stakes appearance.

Lady Melksham stepped out for the first time as a four-year-old in the Cockram Stakes. She began quickly to race behind the solid pace set by Darely mare Glows (Canny Lad – Lustre, by Quest For Fame) before prevailing in a driving finish on testing ground to score by a long neck over Le Societe (Anabaa – Ritzy Lady, by Zabeel).

For Sadler, Lady Melksham’s win evoked sentimental memories. Sadler prepared Lady Melksham’s grand-dam Goblet (Loving Jim – Brimful, by Hopeful Venture) to win at Group 2 level during the mid 1980s.

Lady Melksham became the 12th individual Stakes winner for Artie Schiller. The stallion will stand his first season at Emirates Park’s Victorian property at Diggers’ Rest.

Emirates Park says Artie’s 2012 book is full

Emirates Park Stud has closed the 2012 southern hemisphere breeding book for exciting stallion Artie Schiller (El Prado – Hidden Light, by Majestic Light).

Artie Schiller is in the closing stages of his breakout season, which has resulted in the US-bred sire becoming the Australian Leading Second Season Sire of 2011/12. The sire will stand at Emirates Park’s Victorian property in 2012 after completing his first two books at Independent Stallions.

The ensuing demand for his services has filled all the places available for the stallion, which stands at Winstar Farm in Kentucky during the northern hemisphere breeding season.

“We always anticipated a very positive response to Artie Schiller but even we have been surprised by the extent of the enquiry,” Emirates Park’s nominations manager Bryan Carlson said.

“He’s restricted to 130-odd mares by arrangement with his co-owners in North America and we have had to introduce a waiting list due to the volume of support.

“We knew that Artie Schiller was very popular in Victoria due to the outstanding job Mike and Mat Becker did when introducing him to Australia in the first place.

“The goals this progressive stallion keeps kicking, both here and in North America, have clearly made him a hugely popular sire based on the level of support.”

Breeders lucky enough to get a place for their mares in Artie Schiller’s 2012 book will pay a service fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

Emirates Park joins forces with Independent Stallions in Victoria

A famous Victorian property will return to its original name when Emirates Park Stud and Independent Stallions unite to run Stockwell Stud at Diggers Rest.

The late Ken Cox founded Stockwell Stud in the late 1950s. Cox imported Showdown (Infatuation – Zanzara, by Fairey Fulmar) to Australia and also stood the likes of Arctic Explorer  (Arctic Prince – Flirting, by Big Game) – the sire of champion Tobin Bronze (Arctic Explorer – Amarco, by Masthead), Water Mill (Mill Reef – Heavenly Thought, by St Paddy), Comeram (Amber Rama – Comely, by Boran) as well as the Cox Plate winner Our Poetic Prince (Yeats – Finisterre, by Biscay).

The property became known as Emirates Park when Nasser Lootah bought the stud in the mid-1990s.

Emirates Park has decided to return Stockwell Stud to its original name for its joint venture with Independent Stallions, who operate out of Nagambie in central Victoria.

Independent Stallions stood emerging stallion Artie Schiller before Emirates Park secured a controlling interest in the US-bred sire, who is the leading second crop stallion in Australia this season.

“We have seen too many good stallions cut their teeth in Victoria, only to be lost once their commercial appeal has risen,” Becker said in a statement.

“It was important that Artie Schiller did not follow that path and I am thankful that Trevor Lobb and Emirates Park have recognised and supported Victoria in making sure Artie Schiller stays here.

“It is a bit of a homecoming for me as I moved to Victoria to manage Stockwell Stud in 1989 and spent four years there before launching Independent Stallions.”

Al  Samer and Old Deuteronomy will also stand at the new partnership’s facility, which is located an hour north-west of Melbourne.

Laser Hawk gives Artie a breakthrough Group 1 in Guineas

Tulloch Lodge three-year-old Laser Hawk (Artie Schiller – High Heels, by Canny Lad) has provided a major boost for Victorian-based stallion Artie Schiller (El Prado – Hidden Light, by Majestic Light) with his win in Saturday’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

The Independent Stallions resident has made a solid start to his southern hemisphere breeding career but Laser Haw’s game win over New Zealanders Ocean Park (Thorn Park – Sayyida, by Zabeel) and Silent Achiever (O’Reilly – Winning Spree, by Zabeel), provided the sire with his first Group 1 winner.

Laser Hawk settled fourth behind a smart speed before jockey Nash Rawiller took an inside run at the 300 metres. Laser Hawk fought strongly over the final furlong to join his illustrious half-brother Desert War (Desert King – High Heels, by Canny). The Gooree Park Stud-bred Laser Hawk carried the same red and black silks as his six-timer Group 1-winning sibling.

“He has beaten the best Australasia has to offer,” Waterhouse said. “He did what he is bred to do. It’s wonderful.

“This horse took a big step today and it’s just super.”

Meanwhile, the lightly-raced Big Chill (Artie Schiller – Hard Rider, by Maroof) capped a wonderful day for Artie Schiller with her success in the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

The Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained filly raced outside the early leader Tormented (Charge Forward – Anapine, by Anabaa) before hitting the line strongly to beat the Melbourne Stakes winner Underestimation (Al Samer – Nawadder, by Marscay).

Big Chill became Artie Schiller’s eighth individual Stakes winner with her success.

Kiwis out to continue Rosehill Guineas streak

Six New Zealand-bred three-year-olds will be out to continue the winning run of horses bred in the Shaky Isles in Saturday’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

New Zealand-bred stayers have won the last three editions of the Rosehill Guineas and four of the past six runnings of the race.

The Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) winner Silent Achiever (O’Reilly – Winning Spree, by Zabeel) heads the pre-post betting on the race with another New Zealand-bred contender, Ocean Park (Thorn Park – Sayyida, by Zabeel) on the third line of the market.

Thorn Park (Spinning World – Joy, by Bluebird) produced last year’s Rosehill Guineas winner when Jimmy Choux (Thorn Park – Cierzo, by Centaine) stormed to victory.

Artie Schiller filly tops MM Adelaide day 2

A filly by Breeders Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller (USA) topped yesterday’s second session of the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale at Morphettville.

Catalogued as lot 311, the bay filly was presented at the auction by Wentworth based Sullivans Run and after a fierce bidding battle, Oakbank based horseman Bill Smart snared the filly for $61,000. Smart, a regular buyer at the Adelaide Yearling Sale, outbid Jeremy Rogers, stable foreman for leading Ballarat horseman Darren Weir.

The filly is a half sister to the promising Singapore galloper High Tick and is from a winning Woodman half sister to triple stakes winner El Maze.

On a day for the value hunters, over $1.34 million was traded on 126 lots sold at an average price of $10,651 and clearance rate of 74%.

“It was a solid day’s selling,” Magic Millions Adelaide Manager Chris Russell reported.¬†”It’s pleasing to see the South Australian buyers so strong over the past two days with their spend higher this year than in 2011.”

“It was the same case for out international buyers – with strong interest from Singapore, Macau, New Zealand, Malaysia as well as China,” Russell added.

“Bill Smart, who purchased the top lot today, is a regular at Magic Millions Sales around the country and we wish him, as well as all buyers, the best of luck with their purchases.”

Second Australian stakes winner for Artie Schiller

Independent Stallions shuttler Artie Schiller (El Prado – Hidden Light, by Majestic Light) sired his second Australian stakes winner when Moving Money (Artie Schiller – Subsequential, by Second Empire) claimed Thursday’s Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) at Launceston.

Artie Schiller produced his first southern hemisphere stakes winner when American Dream (Artie Schiller – Secret Desire, by Jugah) scored at Listed level at Sandown in November.

Co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas sent Moving Money to Tasmania from their Adelaide base to compete at the state’s summer carnival.

The move paid immediate dividends when Moving Money settled close to the speed before outslugging his opposition under lights to score by a head.

Moving Money is the first foal to race of the stakes placed Subsequential (Second Empire – Residual, by Zeditave). Belmont Bloodstock paid $60,000 for the gelding at the 2010 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

South Australian operation Mill Park will offer a half-brother to Moving Money by New Approach (Galileo – Park Express, by Ahonoora) at the upcoming 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
