Presenting the first yearlings of a new sire is always an exciting time for a stud farm, and this year Westbury Stud are doubly excited as they present the first yearlings of Tarzino and Telperion.

Tarzino was a champion three-year-old and Telperion (AUS) excelled at two years. Both horses have left horses in their mould and with yearlings across all three Books, Tarzino has 36, and Telperion (AUS) 29, there is plenty for buyers
to choose from.
Trained by Mick Price Tarzino started his three-year-old season with a maiden win in August over 1400m followed a month later with a win over 1600 at Moonee Valley, before finishing seventh in the Caulfield Guineas.
At his next start he stormed home for third in the Gr.2 Vase at Moonee Valley, setting himself up nicely for a crack at the Gr.1 VRC Derby a week later, where he bolted in before a well-earned summer break.
Racing fresh up in February he finished fourth in the Gr.2 MRC Autumn Stakes, before a narrow defeat in the Gr.1 Australian Guineas by Palentino (AUS). Price then took him to Sydney where he was impressive in winning the Rosehill Guineas beating the Champion racehorse Beauty Generation by nearly two lengths, and two weeks later finished fourth to Tavago in the Gr.1 ATC Australian Derby.
That was impressive enough to see him crowned Champion Three-Year-Old colt for the 2015-16 season.
Tarzino is a striking individual and is bred on the very successful Tavistock/Zabeel cross. His dam is a sister to the Gr.2 Perth Cup winner and a half-sister to the former smart two-year-old Kindacross who won five races at two and was group one placed.
Raced by Goldolphin in the Darley blue colours Telperion competed in the best company in Sydney and as a two-year-old. He was rewarded with a win in the Listed Lonhro Plate at his second start and followed that with a fourth in the Gr.2 Skyline Stakes, a fourth in the Gr.1 Golden Slipper before going down narrowly in the Gr.1 ATC Sires’ Stakes.
He had one start at three before the decision was made to retire him to Westbury Stud.
A son of the champion sire Street Cry (IRE), Telperion is a half-brother to the very good racehorse in Kemmentari, with their dam Yvanna being by the champion sire Redoute’s Choice (AUS). It is a family blessed with multiple stakes winners and traces back to the wonderful race mare Denise’s Joy.
“We are really excited to present the yearlings by these two top racehorses,” Westbury Stud General Manager Russell Warwick.
“They both acquitted themselves well on the racetrack and we think their yearlings will do as well. On the back of the successful spring the farm has had we are looking forward to selling our yearlings this summer.
“Miami Bound’s group one win in the Oaks, and her success in the Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes is great for Reliable Man (GB), along with the group one placing of Night’s Watch in the Toorak Handicap for Redwood (IRE) are great for the farm.
“As well Ho Ho Khan (Makfi [GB]- China Choice [AUS]) was the only New Zealand representative in the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase in December, in what was a very high class international field. It was one of the best fields we have seen in the Vase over the last decade, with three Japanese raiders, the Melbourne Cup placegetter Prince of Arran, and the Aidan O’Brien pair of Antony Van Dyke and Mount Everest.
“Ho Ho Khan raced in New Zealand as Mulanchi, he has won three in Hong Kong including the Gr.3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup. We have a lovely half-brother Lot 502 by Telperion (AUS) in Book One.”
Ho Ho Khan’s dam China Choice (Encosta de Lago [AUS]) is a half-sister to the champion Australasian Three-Year-Old Royal Descent.
With six stallions on the Westbury Stud roster; Reliable Man (GB), Tarzino, Redwood(GB), Telperion (AUS) El Roca (AUS) and Swiss Ace (AUS) it’s not surprising that they have over 100 yearlings to sell over the three sales; 33 in Book One, 48 in Book Two and 31 Book Three.
They also have included in the Book One draft a selection of the leading sires including Pierro (AUS) and Tavistock, and it’s a Pierro (AUS) colt that Warwick rates as his star lot.
Catalogued as Lot 155 the Pierro colt is out of Redoute’s Choice (AUS) mare Our Squeezer (AUS).
“This cross has already produced 20% stakes winners to runners,” stated Warwick, “and add to that the dam is out of a Zabeel mare Imposingly and you have a wonderful cross. Imposingly is of course the dam of the two times New Zealand Horse of the Year Bonneval, and the stakes winners Lord Arthur, Imposing Lass, Full of Spirit and Lady Cumquat.
“He is a lovely horse to go with it, he definitely has stallion potential and should be a good racehorse.”
On the subject of proven crosses, Lot 104 is a Tavistock colt out of Miss La Frenz a Zabeel mare.
“This colt has the magic cross like Tarzino and Werther, he is a good style of colt very athletic, if you are looking for a classic three-year-old colt he fits the bill really well.
“This is a good international pedigree, his grandam is the group one stakes winning mare Moonflute.”
Another colt from a good stakes winning family is Lot 398 a Reliable Man (GB) colt out of the More Than Ready (USA) mare Way to Win (AUS) she is a half-sister to the South African Champion Two-Year-Old Delago Deluxe, being out of Suceeding a winning half-sister to Duporth, Excites and Tickets, all out the stakes winning mare Staging, and according to Warwick is a really nice style of colt.
Also out of a More Than Ready (AUS) mare is Lot 383 a Tarzino colt out of Vanilla Ice Cream (AUS).
“He is a gorgeous colt he is almost black and the way he is developing he will be a star come sale time,” Warwick said.
“We sold a Zoustar (AUS) colt out of this mare for $280,000 at the Gold Coast sale last year, it’s a quality family, the second dam is a stakes placed Danehill (USA) mare and is a full sister to the group one winner Danelagh. It’s also the family of the Oaks winner Pinot and the former Hong Kong Horse of the Year Vengeance of Rain.
“Telperion has a cracking colt out of a General Nediym (AUS) mare Tempo Manor this is a sharp sprinting family and traces back to Denise’s Joy and I decided to pair them up. If this is indicative of what they might do it’s exciting he’s a strong sprinter type a pretty sharp horse with a fair bit of Street Cry (IRE) about him.
“He also has a lovely colt in Book Two out of Cattle Dog since the catalogue went to print the first foal out of the mare Red Heeler has won twice.”
Westbury have a nice line of fillies to sell as well, including Lot 232 Redwood (GB)- Romantically (AUS) a full sister to Romancer a stakes winner of seven races who was stakes placed in Melbourne over the spring.
“It’s a good family and she is a quality filly,” according to Warwick, “Redwood (GB) has had a good run over the last couple of months.
“And if you want a filly with great residual value look no further than Lot 69 by Savabeel (AUS) out of Love and Kisses (AUS), a stakes placed winning Encosta De Lago (AUS) mare she has left a stakes winner in Macau in Triple Ex -Sacred Man. We sold a sister at the Gold Coast last year for $200,000 and this filly is a replica of her.
“Another filly who should attract a lot of interest is Lot 387 by Reliable Man (GB) out of Veva Girl.
She is a full sister to group one placed winner Aalaalune and De la Terre who was an impressive two-year-old winner this season, both serious gallopers. She’s a correct filly and this filly is very reminiscent of Aalaalune as a yearling.” ✦
