A debut winner in New Zealand has provided Yarraman Park Stud stallion I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirt – Cannarelle, by Canny Lad) with a dream start to his stud career.
Two-year-old gelding Vinnie Eagle (I Am Invincible – Sweet Maggie, by Danehill Dancer) found the lead early in his first assignment before proving too speedy for his opposition to score at Ruakaka on September 14.
Like his sire, Vinnie Eagle showed brilliant early pace then maintained his speed to the finish to immediately start to repay the $65,000 his trainer Tony Pike paid for him on behalf of Australian owner Colin Keane at the 2013 Inglis Classic Summer Book Sale in Sydney.
Pike said the youngster was the first horse Keane had raced with him but added the Australian-based businessman would be able to see his smart prospect in Sydney early in 2014.
“Colin races horses in Singapore and Macau, as well as Australia, and I think this is his first runner in New Zealand,” Pike said. “He’s from Gosford and all his horses carry the Eagle suffix so it’s nice to win for a new owner.
“He wanted a horse that would get up and go early and hopefully be good enough to go back for the Sydney race so he’ll have a short break now and then we’ll make a programme toward Sydney.”
Yarraman Park’s Harry Mitchell said Pike’s reports on Vinnie Eagle’s progress created plenty of expectation from the team but he was thrilled with the win of I Am Invincible’s first progeny to race.
“Tony has been telling us for some time now that this horse was going well and had good ability, so we’re not surprised to see him come out and win,” Mitchell said.
“We’ve had a lot of very positive feedback on his stock and have booked in a number of mares this spring based on what his two year-olds are showing, so that’s got to be a very good sign.”
The impeccably-built I Am Invincible has served 427 mares in his first three seasons at stud but can look forward to another large book in 2013, especially at his $11,000 service fee, which represents great value for breeders looking to utilise the only son of terrific stallion Invincible Spirit standing at stud in Australia.
